Tax debt - worrying to death

Hi,

Due to an error on my part I’ve ended up with a tax bill of £1400. It’s my fault and I accept responsibility. Lessons learned and all that!!! The issue is, I can’t pay it all back in one go. I just don’t have it. I also don’t have any access to credit due to money issues that I faced even my marriage ended.

I can afford to pay £150 per month but the person at hmrc won’t accept this and they want it all now. I’m beyond stressed.

what can I do? I know it’s my debt and I 100% plan to pay it all. I just need time!

im terrified that im going to have bailiffs and my house etc. anyone know what i can expect? The only thing i can think off is to just Kay the £150 each month and hold my nerve?

It's pretty unusual for HMRC not to accept instalments. What have they said will happen if you don't pay it all in one go?
Send £150 anyway and a recorded delivery letter confirming you have done so and will pay the rest in instalments and clear as soon as possible.
I'm fairly certain they can't send the bailiffs if you have offered to pay.

I'm surprised they won't accept a payment plan. I had the same issue a couple of years ago and they were really helpful. I set a 12 month payment plan up.

Have you had a discussion about setting up an affordable payment plan?

You may have to send them a copy of your budget to demonstrate that you can't pay all in one go, rather than are just choosing not to.

First off, are you certain this correspondence was from HMRC and not a scam? There are soo many convincing HMRC fake scams this time of year.

What reason have they given for not agreeing to instalments?

Here is the link for setting up a Time to Pay arrangement online. If you meet the conditions you may not need to ask someone else.
