NHS Pensions - HELP!

NorthernGirl1981 · 17/02/2025 11:15

Is there anyone here who knows their stuff when it comes to NHS pensions?

I’ve been sent an 8 page document regarding my payments and my entitlements and it makes absolutely no sense to me!!

It’s just full of numbers (and I don’t know where they came from) and terms that I don’t understand.

Would really appreciate some guidance in what it all means??

Is there an online portal you can log into? If so then they usually have a glossary/faqs section which will help you navigate some of the terminology

Some generic knowledge of public sector pensions but not NHS specific.

Can HR or a Union help?

In my experience, it takes time to get to grips with understanding the pension schemes. I plugged away at it for a good long while until I grasped it. If you're still employed, then you can attend some talks or view previous talks via the intranet, but also I think they're available on the nhs pensions website. And as pp said, do look for the glossary of terms.

There’s a really helpful Facebook group called ‘NHS & public sector pensions information’ run by a company called Pengage and they provide advice and guidance on this sort of thing (you may need to pay though depending how in depth your queries are). You may be able to find out enough just looking through the page and their webinar recordings though.

There's a fantastic Facebook page for NHS pensions. Otherwise, do your union offer any support with this?

How old are you? There’s a series of pensions webinars for over 50s NHS staff running atm, I’m joining one tomorrow.

I left the NHS about 18 months ago and it was only when I enquired about my pension a few weeks ago (via email) did I receive this very lengthy/wordy document which contains pages of figures and payouts but no explanations of what those amounts actually mean.

I’m 42 so still about 20 years away from being able to claim it, I just wanted a basic idea of how much I’ll get.

If you have left already it will be a deffered pension. There should be something that tells you how much it is worth now. That amount will increase with inflation each year.
Are you able to post photos of any of the pages that have figures on them and we can help you figure out what the terms mean.
