I think I already know the answer to this but...... any tips on not having to pay thousands of pounds to add my son to my car insurance when he passes his test? Looking to change my car so checking cost of insurance for when he's a new driver (cos I know it costs more than being a learner) and I'm looking at around £1600 at the very least and that's getting a car that i don't even want. I suspect it is what it is but if anyone has any tips to help get it down I would appreciate it. I have a feeling I'm gonna have to pay it or not put him on as a driver.

I think there's an element of having to suck it up. DD's insurance was £1400 for the first year, that was with a black box and restricted mileage but no curfew, in a really old tiny car but when renewal came around it was less than £500 for the second year.

@MilesOfMotivation thank you, yes it would seem that I have no option. Seems to be the going rate so not much choice.

We just paid £800 for my daughter with Hastings - using a black box. She does have a small car, which probably helps

Who will be driving the car the most? If it’s the young driver then best to insure the car in their name with you as the named driver. This keeps you within the law and gets the young person earning NCD

If the young person is just an occasional user then consider a black box but this will restrict YOUR driving. Not all black box restrictions are the same so read the small print!

But bottom line is it will cost £££
