UC migration question

UC12345 · 04/02/2025 11:30

I’ve been sent the migration notice to move to UC but am not sure there is any point in me doing so.

I currently get approx £70 a week CTC. I’ve done the entitled to calculators and things and I would not be entitled to any more on UC.

I have recently received inheritance of just under 20k (sad circumstances but very grateful obviously). While I know savings over 16k will be disregarded for a year, I’m aware that deductions would be made for savings between 6k and 16k - I think this would pretty much cancel out any UC I would receive.

I do also get Child Benefit and a Bereavement benefit but I don’t think this is anything to do with UC and is not affected whether I do apply to migrate?

If I decide not to migrate to UC, am I right in thinking my tax credits would obviously end but CB and BB continue? Do I need to formally say I am not applying for UC?

(I really don’t want to put myself through the anxiety of applying for UC, answering questions, going for job centre meetings etc Etc if I wouldn’t (rightly) be entitled to receive anything at the end of it. I’ve just dug myself out of an anxiety black hole, am busy applying for jobs and am positive that the inheritance can tide me over until I do have a job)
thanks for any help.

Effect of migration notice is that legacy benefits, Child Tax Credit, ceases on deadline day, or actually I think strictly speaking the day before. HMRC will write to you to finalise your claim.

If you do nothing then, as you say, CB and the Bereavement Benefit will continue. UC will not do anything; you need to claim.

I'm not sure you're right about how tariff income on your capital affects UC and think you might have some other transitional protection.

I'd very strongly advise that you call Help to Claim and get them to talk you through your options and do a before/after check for you.

Another one here advising you to speak to help to claim. I think the transitional protection is worked out before any deductions ( so income from tarrif income would some into that ).

I would agree that you should contact Help to Claim as this as Managed Migration is complex area.
