Hi all hoping someone can advise. I will be giving birth soon and will be a single mum. So far I never claimed any support. My work have 3 months fully paid maternity ( full salary ) and after that is the maternity pay from the government. My question is when is the best time to apply for UC as I will need some support with my rent when I'm on the statutory maternity pay? Shall I do it at the start or wait for the 2 months to pass? Is thr UC automatically adjusted based on income like can I apply when the baby is here although ill be getting my full salary so likely my UC will be very little or wait?

I don’t actually believe you can get any if you are getting maternity leave from your employer. You can claim child benefit once got baby is born.

Apologies, you can claim when you reach the unpaid section of your maternity leave.

There's no upper income limit beyond which UC ceases to be payable, it's based on perceived need less tapered income.

If you've got three kids and live in an area where rents are high like Outer NW London you can both receive UC and pay higher rate tax.

Use an on line tool such as Entitled to or Turn2Us.

As ever, Help to Claim is the go to.

Will you be able to save from your earlier payments to fund later months? If you have 6k + savings your eligibility to uc reduces. You get child benefit once baby arrives.

Incorrect.
You can apply anytime OP. Might not be entitled to anything before baby comes but apply as soon as they do.
UC is based on your income, rent and number of children. Even on say 30k as a lone parent with a high rent you would get help.

Not really

I live in London and my rent is eating most my income anyway so for sure I can't save for more than 1 or 2 months.

Apply for it just before your maternity pay decreases or stops.

Apply for it just before your maternity pay decreases or stops.

You need to check whether, with a child and a Work Allowance, you qualify for it before you go down to SMP only.

If you've too much on full pay check exactly when your pay starts to drop and what your pay will be on each monthly(?) pay day.

Apply immediately after the last payday when you've too much.

Have you checked your entitlement? if you are single, and now have a child you may already be eligible even with your wages.
you might get a small top up for the first few months of your Mat leave but then as the income drops less will be taken off UC.
have you applied for child benefit too?

you can use the universal credit essentials we. Page to calculate your Uc

if you are eligible and your income cancels out the Uc it will only auto close after 6 months personally I’d get the ball rolling

just realised you haven’t given birth yet - I would check your entitlement as if baby was here and then apply when born

Danikm151 · 03/02/2025 21:52

It depends on your salary.

I applied after the 90% income stopped when baby was 6 weeks old. I didn’t realise I could have applied as soon as baby was born.
it Worth doing a few benefits calculators based on your full wage, smp etc
