Underpaid on my last wage at work...

Hello

i was hoping there may be someone a bit more knowledgeable or who has maybe worked in hr who can advise please?

at my previous job I got paid on the 20th of each month and my last day in work was the 10th of the month.

I have only been paid for 10 days work even though I worked from the 20th December to 10th January.

they have said this is because there pay roll runs from the 1st to the 1st of the month... does this seem right to you? They are saying essentially anything I worked from the 20th December to 31st December would have been paid in my previous wage?

thanks if anyone can help.

Hi, that sounds normal, I can't remember my wage cut off date but is about a week before I actually get paid and has been in all jobs I work to give them time to run payroll. DHs is the same. It should say on your payslips the dates you get paid from to, but if not should be in your contract.

So from what they're saying the wage you received on the 20th of December would cover the period between the 1st December and the 1st January.

And you've been paid the 10 days you've worked in January.

Maybe double check with HR - my previous employer was the same though we got paid on the 14th for that month so it may be correct but I can't say for certain.

That sounds normal. Can you remember when you started? What was your first pay, ie. Did you start on the 1st and get paid on 20th for a full month?

rainbowunicorn · 31/01/2025 00:08

Yes, that sounds normal

TreesOfGreen99 · 31/01/2025 00:09

Yes, sounds very usual. We pay on the 25th of the month but it covers the whole calendar month.
From your post it sounds as though you have already checked with your previous employer and they have confirmed it.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 31/01/2025 00:09

My wage slip had the pay period on it, for example:
Pay date/tax period 25-12-24
Paid from/Paid to 1-12-24 31-12-24
Overtime paid to 30-11-24

So wage goes in on 25th but covers until the end of the month. Overtime was always a month behind.

Thanks for the replies :)

it sounds logical what they are saying... however what is confusing me is that even though I had a full wage on December 20th... hypothetically if my last day was 31st december, then I would of received no money at all for working from 20th December to 31st december? So if I left my job on pay day which is the 20th I would get exactly the same amount for working til the 31st?

it just seems a bit odd to me.

Yeah I started 3rd October 2013 and didn't get a full months pay on the 20th but to be fair does look like I got paid a bit more than the days I worked.

You'd get a final pay cheque in the January run for those 11 days - even if you've left. Or, an off-cycle final cheque for those days. At least, that's how it worked at any place I've worked.

No, if you left on 20th, you'd have given notice and they would know you were leaving so would reduce your December pay to the twenty days you worked.

If you left on 31st you would not be due any more money because the pay on 20th took you up to 31st.

It's very common to be paid IN the month for the full calendar month. So, you're paid a bit behind and a bit ahead.

Your employment contract probably says something like "you will be paid on 20th of the month for the calendar month".

I work in HR. I can't tell you how often I have to explain this to people, so it's not unusual for people to misunderstand it.

Thank you :)

that does actually make more sense now you have explained it like that

I have requested the pay slip but I have still not received it yet so hopefully when I get that it will help as well.

based on the replies it looks like it had been done correctly.

thank you everyone.
