I dropped and lost my keys and got locked out so I needed to phone the council for a locksmith out of hours on the weekend and it’s a £200+ bill. I don’t know exactly how much it is until I get the invoice. I don’t work and am disabled just Incase that’s relevant. Is there a grant or something like that which might cover it? Ideally if I don’t have to pay I’d rather not.

Could you get an advance on your UC? Not sure if this would be granted though as it’s not really a repair it’s because you lost your keys. Have you asked if you can pay in installments instead of in one go? That’s probably an option that’s more likely.

Could call for a budgeting advance, however they are only offered for electrical appliances ie washing machine fridge/ freezer ect.
Just call and say they need replacing.
Yes its a white lie but it will get paid back and sometimes you've just got to do what you've got to do to get by!

Ideally if I don’t have to pay I’d rather not so much better if the taxpayers could foot the bill
right? (Yes, I know people on UC pay tax, but so much less than what they receive from the state)

Honestly, what is this attitude? I need to pay for something - could someone else pay instead?

Meecrowahvey · 26/01/2025 11:09

Speak to the council and ask for an affordable payment plan.

Miley1967 · 26/01/2025 11:11

I'm sure the council would let you pay in installments.

I don't think people pay any tax whilst on UC unless they are also working.

You'll also get additional benefits if disabled.

Just pay it and don't do it again.

So entitled.

What part of the post did you miss? Op is disabled. Hardly “entitled”. Try managing on UC and disability benefits.

The council will absolutely let you pay in installments. As long as you keep up with the payments, even if you have to pay up over a year or 2, they will be fine.

Exactly!! The sense of entitlement from some people is mind-blowing! Just no responsibility for their own lives. Crazy!!!! 🙈😹😹😹

I'm sorry but I think you'll have to phone and ask for a payment plan. You lost the keys and therefore should foot the bill, not the taxpayer.

Lovelybitofsquirrel3 · 26/01/2025 13:17

You lot complaining about my entitlement, try living on universal credit and disability benefit
