How to change tax allowance allocation

Does anyone know how to change the personal allowance so that I get it on my primary source of income? Is there a way of doing it online or do I have to speak to HMRC? Don’t really want to talk to them if I can help it.

Just done a retire and return thing to access a small pension with nhs. I work part time and the major part of my personal tax allowance has been applied to my small £2k a year pension but I want it on my main job. As it stands I will be paying tax on all but £500 of my salary.

Spoke to payroll at work, who were not much help but I was told just to go online and change it there but I can’t find how to do this.

Alternatively, do I wait till April when it will be assessed again and hope HMRC will pick this up?

Hi.... I have a civil service pension, and a part time NHS job.
I rang the tax office, said I wanted all the tax to be deducted from my wage and not my pension. They adjusted it while I was on the phone and I got a new tax code letter about a week later.
To be honest they were really helpful when I rang them

As above. Just phone HMRC. You might wait a while but they were very helpful when my P45 figures got messed up

PoachedDregs · 25/01/2025 19:45

I had this and I had to ring.

It would eventually be corrected in the following tax year but it's best just to ring and get it sorted now.

I had this when I (early) retired.

Took two pensions and was taxed fully on both of them, could have rung HMRC to get it sorted but I had confidence it would get sorted after April and sure enough, in June they contacted me and within the week I was refunded several £k.

Thank you. I’ll brace myself for the long wait on the phone and give them a ring.

Log on to your personal account on HMReC and change the amounts you expect to receive from each income source

Don't try to phone HMRC until after the self assessment deadline has passed next Friday. It's their busiest time of year.

You should be able to do this (or send them a secure message) in your personal tax account. If you don't have one of these, you should set one up as they're useful to have as it means you can keep an eye on things and log in any time you have a query.

Sheepslippers · 26/01/2025 08:02

MikeRafone is this the amount for the next financial year or up to the end of the current one?

Bjorkdidit is the govt gateway thing that you log into? I’ve looked at that online and couldn’t see how to message.

There's also a chat online function on HMRC's website. You'll find if you Google. You start by speaking to a bot but you can usually get simple matters sorted that way.

Sheepslippers · 26/01/2025 10:46

Thank you. I will give that a try coz I don’t think I’ll get through on the phone this week.

I’ve changed the amount of income I think I’m going to receive from each income source, part way through the tax year

ive done this online on the personal login

Sheepslippers · 26/01/2025 12:29

Thanks MikeRafone I’ve checked and the estimated income to the end of the tax year for each source and it’s near enough accurate. I’ll try the online chat.

Hi. I’m in a similar situation and just got a new tax code (small pension taken out). I want my personal allowance to be applied to my job where I earn the most money.

Is it an easy thing to sort out by just ringing/going online? I’ve never had much dealing with HMRC before so not sure of the procedure.
