Pay rise in line with inflation

I’ve worked for the same small business for nearly 12 years. I think every year we got a (small) rise in March / April that was to cover the cost of inflation.
We were taken over last year and we didn’t get on; it was such a busy and chaotic time work wise that I didn’t overthink it at the time. However, I overheard this week 2 of my new colleagues talking about the coming new tax year “bump” in pay and when I said we didn’t get one last year they said they’re not allowed to talk about salaries to others but they felt I should know that all the employees at the business who took us over got small pay rises and none of us who were taken over did. They are currently
looking at whether they will be able to give us all a small pay rise this April. This seems both unfair (given the rest of the organisation got one) and concerning to me; I don’t earn a lot and I’m the sole income in my household and the small increments I get in line with inflation help offset increased costs each year.
Is it a luxury now to get a small bump in line with inflation or am I out of date and should accept its the new normal? TIA.

  • sorry typo, not sure why it says we didn’t get on! Meant to read we didn’t get one (a pay rise)

'they’re not allowed to talk about salaries to others'

Well that's illegal/not enforceable.

Yes they seemed really nervous about it too which was odd! I wasn’t asking about their salaries, and never would, they just felt they needed to let me know they had all received rises and felt it wrong that we hadn’t. All felt a bit cloak and dagger, but I just wondered if this is as unreasonable as I feel it is especially if we don’t get a rise this year, To me, even with a low Salary, it’s always gone up a tiny bit yearly with inflation.

Lot's and lots of companies don't offer inflation based pay rises - happened for years even with teacher and nurses.

There are going to be even more companies doing the same this year due to employer NI increases and increase in min wage.

An ok thank you- hadn’t thought of the increase in employer NI contributions, that makes sense.
