Car insurance policy holder passed away? Help

Need some help.

Family member passed away, tax & insurance was in their name.

A second family member was second policy holder and needs to come to collect the car, they are being awkward and not dealing with the insurance company.
I've looked online and it seems when the main policy holder passes away the insurance & tax is no longer valid even for the second policy holder is this correct?!
My dp is going nuts saying it needs to be paid this month so the family member can collect the car but surely he's paying it for no reason as it's no longer valid?

Of course it's not valid. The policy holder has passed away.

The relative must set up their own insurance now.

Thanks that's what I've said, if they get stopped driving or have an accident it's going to be the family members fault.

You need to have informed the insurance company of the policy holder's death at the time and set up a new one. Right now it isn't even covered for theft.

it's really not a big deal, you just contact the insurance and tell them the policy holder has died, sometimes the no claims can even be passed to the named person, some companies will run through a new quote over the phone and arrange the new policy immediately.

There's no 2nd policy holder, there's a policy holder and a 2nd driver

The policy holder has died and the policy will end. There may, or may not, be a refund due to the estate.

The next of kin needs to inform the insurance company of the death. If necessary ask them for advice on what to do next.

If the second driver is going to take the car and run it they need insurance in their own name. If they're just taking it to a garage or similar for sale there are options for short term cover.

Your DP should not pay to try to continue the policy. If he does, without telling the insurer of the death, it’s fraud.

The person who is going to take the car , needs to insure it. If they don’t that’s entirely on them. They could lose their license; the car could be seized. Potentially tougher penalty if there’s an accident.

If it’s just going for sale, the dealer can arrange a pick up on their insurance .

I was a named driver on my husbands policy when he passed away, I had to ring the insurance company and tell them he had passed, they then transferred the insurance into my name for the remainder of the month to allow me to keep the car on the road and drive it if I needed to.

You need to speak to the insurance company as I'm sure they will be able to offer a solution to the problem, whilst being understanding of the situation.

But not telling them is NOT the way to deal with this, should an accident happen or the vehicle be stolen you will be uninsured and in a lot of bother trying to sort out.

Tell him to just make the call sooner rather than later

Also bear in mind that if the policy holder was also the registered keeper, and DVLA have been informed of their death via the Tell Us Once Service ,the car may no longer be taxed and would need to be kept off-road (I got into a terrible muddle trying to sort out the status of my father's car after his death). You can check here Check if a vehicle is taxed - GOV.UK
