Hi please can anyone advise whether buying jewellery would be seen as Deprivation of capital?

Are you concerned about your spending affecting your current claim, or about how UC might judge your spending if you start a new claim in a couple of years.

These type of questions are asked all the time on benefits boards. I read one yesterday where someone got an inheritance, wanted to know if she bought a motorhome would it be deprivation of assets, and if she would have to declare the money she received from renting it out.

Think I might have read that one lol.

So once your migration period ends you said you'll live off savings so is your plan to then make a new claim in a few years time once your savings are lower?

In which case I suspect it will be fine because it's unlikely to show up on bank statements etc. There also won't be an issue with you buying it now whilst you're in the transition period.

You don’t need to bother to tell them that you’ve spent anything if you don’t want to. I had less than that but over £6000. Spent about £1500 and was going to update it with UC but then it was so invasive wanting to know about all my bank accounts including my current account (which is sometimes heavily overdrawn and sometimes not) that I decided to not bother and let them carry on deducting too much money from me for savings I don’t have. A couple of thousand doesn’t make all that much difference anyway.

A few thousands loss doesn't make much difference to you but you're claiming UC?

I think the poster means they have less than £6000 in savings but it’s not worth informing UC.

UC only take £4.35 for every £250 you have over £6000 in savings so presumably they’re only being deducted a small amount from their UC for savings because UC think they have over £6000 but they won’t tell them as they’ll have to show bank statements to prove it.

Thanks all seems I’ll be ok buying it then as yes won’t be claiming after this 12 months not for a good while anyway.
Thanks to those who actually read the post and didn’t just accuse me of buying stuff to keep under 16k ( one thing I never said ) as I’ll remain over 16k

What did you claim though?
Universal credit has always had a savings limit but tax credits never did

You're right! I've just looked it up. I had no idea!
When I claimed, I was in rented property and eligible for housing benefit too. There was definitely a limit on savings for HB, I expect that's what I remember. Can't think what the rationale was behind letting people keep tens of thousands in savings. Truly shocked. No wonder the tories made it their concern to overhaul it with UC!

Yes, I should’ve said it was possibly because of housing benefit- yes housing benefit is £16,000 limit as well.

Unbelievable isn’t it!

No we would still be over 16k so wouldn’t be carrying on the claim once the 12 months is up

In that case it sounds like it won't make any difference to your benefits. You should still tell them and they may still consider it deprivation of assets but the DWP considering it deprivation of assets won't actually affect you as the only 'sanction' they apply is to treat you like you still had the money.
