Self Assessment Tax Return Confusion

CaribouCarafe · 14/01/2025 15:48

Hi wise mumsnetters, I completed my 2023/2024 tax return last year and paid it in full.

Do I need to do anything else by January 31st 2025? From my understanding, I don't need to declare my 2024/2025 self employed income or capital gains until April 2025?

Regretting having a side gig job as it's more stress than it's worth with HMRC!

Deadline for self assessment tax returns is always 31/1 every year.

falalalatte · 14/01/2025 19:51

23/24 is due by 31/01/25, if you've already submitted and paid your tax then you don't need to do anything else.

24/25 can be submitted from 6th April 2025 and deadline for filing and paying tax is 31/01/26.

GreyBlackBay · 14/01/2025 19:51

No you're done for 23/24

24/25 needs to be submitted by end Jan 26

What capital gain do you need to report? Gains on property are reportable within 60 days of completion.

BorgQueen · 14/01/2025 20:26

Presumably you have logged in to your tax account and it states ‘Nothing to pay’ ?
As long as you’ve paid the 23/24 bill plus any payment on account due back in July, that’s it until after 5th April.

CaribouCarafe · 14/01/2025 20:48

Thank you all for confirming! I did have the "nothing to pay" message on the tax portal but wasn't sure whether that was correct or not as I informed them my business had closed in December 2023 but then I did some ad hoc consultancy work during my mat leave recently (post April 2025) which they wouldn't know about yet.

The capital gains is from selling Crypto assets, not property, so I believe it's exempt from the 60 days payment?

*post April 2024

That's fine, you can wait until your next tax return is due or you can report in real time online. Either is fine.
