Tax refund?

Any tax/payroll people about? I retired from my ‘career’ job a couple of years ago as the role changed, all the good parts went and the boring parts remained! I left with a year’s redundancy so was in no hurry to get back to work. Got a bit bored though, so joined the NHS admin ‘bank’.
So, tax year 23-24 I earned just shy of £8000 and paid circa £1500 tax so am due a refund. Thought it should have arrived by now so checked Government Gateway, the comment for 23-24 states that I didn’t work that year so no tax due! (And none to be refunded). Phoned HMRC who confirmed they had no record of my working and to contact my employer and ask them to forward my details - I did so, to be told by NHS payroll that they had completed their work for the tax year and that HMRC had all the details and there was nothing they could do (and were very adamant about it! So what to do? I am due the refund - I have a P60 - but no one seems willing to help.

I'd suggest calling HMRC again and giving them the PAYE reference for where you worked plus your Ni number, tell them you have a P60 so they must have a record. Is your NI number correct on the P60 ?

You will have to phone HMRC again and ask for a case to be opened. Get all your payslips, p60, p45 copied ready to send across.

So you stopped working in 22-23, but at the end were paid 1 years redundancy. 23-24 you did a small amount £8k of work, but this is not logged on your account. So where is it? Whose account is it logged on?

I had 2 massive cases with HMRC that took months to sort, HMRC blaming payroll dept, when I had 1 employees payroll accidentally logged to another employees ni account.

I'd also phone old employer again, email actually so there's a paper trail and ask them to investigate again. Because it'll need to be investigated from both sides : HMRC and employers payroll dept. HMRC asked for RTI resubmission but that failed.

In the end HMRC needed different depts to unallocate the submission against the wrong employee. Then a different dept to adjust it. Then a different dept to attach it to the right employee.

It could he something like my case? Or a more basic problem?
It is not unheard of.

Thanks both. I’ll ring HMRC again. And email NHS payroll so I have a paper trail.

Well, I still haven’t got my tax refund but soon hopefully! After a lot of phone calls to both HMRC and the NHS trust I found out that my date of birth had
been added incorrectly to my record when I joined - by one day! (My DOB is the 15th, it was recorded as the 16th). So I was given a temporary N.I. number which all my pay information was allocated to. HMRC are now reconciling it to my proper NI number so I hope see my money soon. (Although I don’t understand how my P60 and payslips had my correct N.I. number)?
