Tax code for uniform costs

ChilledProsecco · 11/01/2025 10:08

I'm doing my tax form for self-assessment & thinking I can claim bank the cost of laundering my work uniform (NHS).

Does anyone know how much I can claim, if it can be backdated & which section/code of the form I use? Thanks

HMRC have a very extensive library that deals with almost all tax situations..

Thanks for the links @DogInATent - but the HMRC website just takes me round in circles & doesn't specify an amount I can claim, or how to claim previous tears. So frustrating.

Umm, that page gives you an exact amount you can claim on the Flat Rate scheme, and tells you where to put it on the form.

There are other pages on making backdated claims (these are unlikely to be uniform specific).

It tells you exactly in that link, I just followed it. 60.00 unless your occupation is in the list. Then it's that amount. It also tells you which box to use.

Oh.. you can't normally make a claim for previous years' expenses on this year's SA form (there is an exception if you're starting a new business). You have to do those separately either via the online portal from your account screen, or by writing a letter. It may or may not be worth the hassle, remember you only get back the amount you would have paid in tax and NI on the expense claimed. For example, if you're allowed £60 on the flat rate scheme and you're a standard rate taxpayer you're only looking at about £15 back as a tax refund (very rough estimate).

Thanks - I think I can claim £125 a year (am NHS) so I can start with that & see if I can get it backdated at a later stage. It try & speak to them.

You can also claim tax back on any professional memberships that you pay.

Thanks @Muchtoomuchtodo - I've been claiming that so doing better with that one.

Every little helps with the tax bill!
