If someone is selling something on ebay and giving really dangerous and untrue advice with it, what if anything should you do?

Have seen this for sale on Ebay, and after a bit of investigation realised it is actually this Argos one - even the bumf about it is copy-and-pasted from the Argos website. And it is £20 from Argos rather than the £100 being asked on Ebay but thats not what I have the biggest issue with.

Real problem is, the seller is saying its ok to light a woodburning stove inside it! Which is really dangerous - there are some tipi tents out there that are fire retardent treated so you can do this, but the Argos ones are not among them.

Should I report it to Ebay? It could kill someone if they lit a burner in a cheap crappy nylon tent like this.

Email ebay and tell them. It's a bit of a death trap.

Couldn't you politely raise your concerns with the seller to give them a chance to answer the claim?

stripeymama · 04/05/2008 16:14

I did email them a week ago to ask about it but they never replied.

how odd, they are advertising it as light enough to carry, but photographing it with a cast iron woodburning stove

But the £20 Argos one says it is Fire retardant

RustyBear · 04/05/2008 16:17

Are you saying the Argos one isn't fire retardent either? Because that link to the ARgos page clearly states it is - perhaps you need to email Argos too.

stripeymama · 04/05/2008 16:19

Yeah, they have to be fire retardent to be legal for sale - its not the same as being safe to actually light a fire inside the thing.

The ones you can light a fire in are £300+, and have some sort of special coating.

there's a difference between "fire retardant" and "will not catch fire if it collapses on your very hot stove in the middle of the night" though.

Just like children's nightclothes- are a bit slower than untreated clothes but will still catch fire eventually.

All Argos tents say 'fire retardent' - they have to be by law.

But to suggest that means you can light a fire (even in a stove) in them is dangerous. Just 'cos its the shape of a more expensive and specially treated tent, doesn't make it safe to have a fire in it.
