Hello. I have an employee job for which I pay tax and a part time self employed job. During 23/24 I earnt less than £1000 in my self employed role as I only began at the end of the tax year. I have registered as self employed and they are chasing me to complete a self assessment but do I need to if I have not learnt over £1000? I dont want to get fined

I’d just do it anyway, it won’t take long at all with that amount of earnings - 15 minutes maximum- and is good practice for next year.

If you have registered then yes. You need to fill out a return. At the start there will be a section that you fill in with your details and earnings from both your employment and self employment after which they will determine whether you fill in the rest of the form.

Your tax is calculated from your combined income. You most likely will be fined if you do not fill it in.

Start doing it and you get asked if you earned over 1k...if you say no it will Register it

I just had this on my dwindling royalties from books I wrote years ago. Basically you can check if you fill in the "do I need to fill out a tax return" form https://www.gov.uk/check-if-you-need-tax-return so I did that then I logged into self assessment and filled out an identical form which was all they needed from me this year.

Check if you need to send a Self Assessment tax return

Use this tool to find out if you need to send a tax return for the 2023 to 2024 tax year (6 April 2023 to 5 April 2024).

If you are registered you have to do it anyway, no matter how low your self-employed income.

Yeah you need to do it. It doesn't take long.
