Pay - new job

Hello,
If I start a new job on the 2nd of the month, but I know from a letter about pensions that the company pay period is 23rd - 22nd of the month, does that mean that my first pay, that I receive on the last day of the month will be for 2nd - 22nd, and not 2nd to end of month?
Thanks!

A lot of outfits concerned with Welfare etc advice pay around the third week of the month.

All four I've worked for pay the whole month's salary on that date so effectively I'm paid in advance for the last week.

Ah thanks @Bromptotoo but I believe the pay day is last day of the money here.

If you know the answer why ask the question?

ScaryM0nster · 05/01/2025 10:36

It’ll depend on the individual company approach.

I’ve worked somewhere that paid you middle of the month for the whole month, and also part way through but only for the point up to 3 days before pay day.

You’ll need to ask them.

Apparently the 23rd is the cheapest day to do a payment, someone told me recently.

You probably need to check with your employer. I've been places where they paid half the month in arrears, half in advance, others where they only paid in arrears. I prefer being paid in arrears only, but apart from the first month, it doesn't really make a difference, unless you are paid for exact hours which might vary.

I am one payslip into a new job - it will be different next month, as there was no pension on this one, because they don't enroll you until you have been there a month; I've now had confirmation of my enrollment, so the pay I receive will go down.

Are you a salaried worker?

Pleasestopthebunfight · 05/01/2025 11:14

@Bromptotoo I don't know the answer but maybe I didn't phrase the question correctly.
I know that the company pay period is 23rd - 22nd and I know that pay day is the last day of the month.
I started on 2nd.
I'm wondering whether on 31st January I will be paid from 2nd - 31st or 2nd - 23rd. I'm assuming 2nd - 23rd.

Ahh sorry, got it now; read/replied in too much haste.

Calculating pay to the 22nd and paying it a week later is new permutation for me.

Yes if the pay month is 23rd to 22nd then I'd expect the first month to pay you from 2nd to 22nd inclusive.

LIZS · 05/01/2025 11:23

You need to know the cut off date for payroll to ensure you get paid in your first month. I've had pay mid month, two weeks in arrears, two in advance, or end of month in arrears.

No worries - I didn't word my question particularly well!
Thank you - this is what I'm assuming will be the case. The letter mentioning 23rd - 22nd was all in relation to pensions and when auto enrolment will kick in.

I will double check that the payday is the last day of the month but I'm pretty sure that's what was said.

The letter says "our pay period starts on 23rd day of the calendar month and runs until the 22nd day of the following month".

Just trying to make sure I organise my finances appropriately!

My company 'payroll period' is 26th to 25th - so any amendments to payroll, overtime, new hires or whatever must be dealt with by the 25th to be paid the following month.

My pay date is the 20th.

On each pay date, I'm paid for that calendar month, so 1st to 31st...i'm paid in advance for the last ten days of the month.

The 'payroll period' as outlined in a new contract is not necessarily the same period for which you're paid on pay day. But this is SO often not understood, even by HR people ime.

Hypothetically, if you started at my company on 2nd Jan, you'd be paid:

20th Jan £0 (Missed payroll cut off for Jan)
20th Feb - from 2nd Jan to end Feb
20th March - calendar month of March

Pleasestopthebunfight · 05/01/2025 14:03

@MauveVelcro thank you that’s really helpful 😊

Yes, agree with @MauveVelcro - the payroll period (admin), pay date (can vary month to month e.g. last Thurs of a month, or be fixed e.g. 28th every month) and what days/hours you’re actually being paid for (a calendar month in advance or arrears, or another calculation of advance/arrears) don’t really all have a useful relationship to each other!
