HMRC home visit

Hi,

I currently owe HRMC £515. I am trying to solve this, however I am aware that they can send out HRMC field officers to your home - I would hate this. How likely is this for what I imagine is a relatively small debt?

Thank you

You are being ridiculous. Pay it as soon as you can otherwise you may incur interest and/or a fine.

I would put money on highly unlikely.
Would have thought that would be reserved for bigger debts.
More likely they will phone you... That's my opinion, not an informed position btw

I really don’t think HMRC will be visiting you for £500. Where have you got this idea?

I saw it online - apparently they have field officers who can come to your home

Highly highly unlikely. It wouldn’t be worth the time. In some areas they wouldn’t even chase you for such a small sum. What people got away in covid is depressing.

I owe them 3,5 k I set up payment plan

what’s dodgy about your home ? 😂

You or someone most likely got it confused with business premises visits

That's probably for the people that are suspected of having evaded thousands so the inspector can look for evidence of lifestyle that's beyond the declared income and see reactions to questioning.

The cost of sending someone out over a £500 debt is disproportionate so wouldn't be considered.

No they can visit at home, happened to a friend of mine. They owed >£50k though.

I doubt they’d visit you over £500 OP.

I am an accountant and in 30 years practising have only known of one unplanned home visit. That was for about £20k, which actually wasn't due yet and they sent the debt collector to the house a week before it was due. There had been a mix up in the paperwork and HMRC had the due date a year earlier than it should have been so thought it was nearly a year overdue.

The most important thing is to keep in contact with HMRC and make a payment plan. Do not just ignore it. That will stop any chance of a home visit, even though it would be extremely unlikely for that sum anyway.

I had one of these. I owed 11k, i hasn't paid due to admin phobia/grief, it was a strange time in my life.

They just knocked on my door one Wednesday morning. The man was extremely kind, we had a cup of tea and I paid him, which he wasn't expecting, he had planned to try and sort a payement plan.

They aren't going to visit for £500 though. But to reassure you, they are very kind when they do!
