It's such a huge relief as DH had some health issues recently so decided to cut back on work by 90% (he's self employed). We can now relax and sleep well at night knowing it's all ours. House is work about 650k.

I would love to finish mine in November when my current fix ends but I think April 26 is more realistic

For the last 2 years I have paused payments to my mortgage (utilised previous overpayments in order to underpay) and been paying the equivalent into annual savers and saving accounts. I think I will be about 10k short in November. Kicking myself for doing doing 3 year fix instead of a 5.

lovehisDobbyears · 03/01/2025 16:55

Congratulations! 🥳
We're working towards this goal. 1 year and 1 month left for us. 😃 February 2026 we'll be out of our fixed term and will have £29,000 left, which we're going to pay off straight away in one lump sum so we'll be mortgage free from then. We'll be 43 and 44. So exciting!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 03/01/2025 18:25

@doneandone I wouldn't overpay quite the opposite I'd extend my term to reduce the payments and put the savings in a high interest savings account instead and then put that towards the mortgage at the end of this current low interest produce. That's what I've just done over the last couple years.

stockpilingallthecheese · 03/01/2025 18:43

Congratulations! I'm late 30s and would absolutely love to be in your position at your age, saving and overpaying where we can Flowers

Bananalanacake · 03/01/2025 18:59

Well done, I had a cheap as poss register office wedding so I could spend money paying off the mortgage instead, 3 months later interest rates went up.

I know this is now an old thread, and I’m not sure if this comment will make it ‘active’ again, but I just wanted to say - we paid our mortgage off today! 😃 Feeling very happy.

Congratulations!!! How long did it take? You must be over the moon! Have you decided what to do with the money that was being funnelled into the mortgage?

Planner2026 · 02/03/2026 16:59

WOOP WOOP! Congratulations to you - you must feel elated x

Marypoppinsisnosaint · 02/03/2026 18:39

Massive congratulations. This will be me in June 2027😀

@Wigtopiawhen we remortgaged 5 years ago, we set the term to 5 years fixed (thank goodness as we got a low interest rate) and total term 8 years. About 3 years ago, we calculated how much would be left to pay after the 5 years and saved each month so we’d have enough to pay it off. We were paying £910 a month on the mortgage and putting £500 a month into an ISA. We’ll build savings up a bit but want lots of nice holidays too.

lovehisDobbyears · 03/03/2026 18:27

@Wingingitbesticannot long to go for you. It’s a wonderful feeling! Have you already started to think about what you’ll do with the spare money?

Youabsoluteblinder · 03/03/2026 20:13

I had wondered if this thread was still going on strong!

My DH and I had hoped to be mortgage free by the time we were 45 and we paid off our mortgage last month. DH just turned 45 and I turned 46 on the day our bank confirmed our mortgage account had been closed following full repayment.

When we renewed our mortgage deal 3 years ago, my DH calculated that if we continued saving at the level we were doing then we would be mortgage free by the end of our fixed rate deal. Still can't believe we've actually done it.

lovehisDobbyears · 03/03/2026 20:19

@Youabsoluteblinder congratulations! 🥳 similar ages to us. I’m 44 and my husband is 43. We transferred the money to clear the balance into the mortgage account yesterday and when we logged on this morning, the mortgage account is no longer showing. Just waiting for confirmation letter from Halifax.

Brilliant work and excellent planning! I think we should have ours paid off in around 2.5 or 3 years time if all goes to plan!! 🤞🤞

lovehisDobbyears · 03/03/2026 20:57

@Wigtopiaamazing - fingers crossed for you that it all goes to plan. I think I started the countdown app going at just under 3 years left. X

We paid ours off tonight! Dont have many people to tell so was happy to see this thread!

TwinklyLightsForXmas · 03/03/2026 21:14

We paid ours off in May last year. No one knows as it would not be well received by various members of both families so we’ve kept it to ourselves but I so proud of our decision to consistently overpay. It has made a huge difference to our lives and saved us thousands in interest payments. We were lucky to find a mortgage that had no limit on overpayment provided we didn’t clear the balance. Well done to everyone who’s managed this too.

Congratulations!! Have you plans for the extra money you will have each month?! Have you a celebration lined up? A meal out/in? Beverage of choice?!

Nice one! Such a shame that some people cannot just be happy for others. But I get it. Not sure how loudly I would shout about it for the same reasons when we finally pay it off. Well done though!

Jbum · 03/03/2026 21:44

Amazing news, congratulations must be a wonderful feeling.

I have 21 payments left im getting so excited

HeyJelly · 04/03/2026 13:27

Congratulations :)
Also paid ours off in January, was a bit of an anti climax 😂 was expecting people to pop out with party poppers! Also chosen not to tell anyone other than 1 close relative as we felt it could be used against us, family can be weird about seeing others do well 🙈
