Good supermarket swaps

I'm trying to spend less on the weekly shop. I have to shop at Tesco.

Does anyone know if the Tesco rice is Ok? I usually buy Tilda long grain.

Also does the Tesco non bio liquid clean clothes well? I've always used Fairy...

And any other Tesco good swaps?

We use the Tesco non bio it’s great. Both the gel and liquid. Also buy Tesco rice. The best Tesco swap is their malt wheats instead of shreddies, so much cheaper and way nicer.

Tilda rice is much better than own brand A it's similar to finest. Cheaper still is basmati from the Asian food store or amazon we get 10kg bags or amazon.

We get green dragon Thai hom fragrant rice and it's beautiful. Not just for Thai we have it with everything

I use Aldi own brand clothes washing liquid and it's fine and always will

I switched back to fairy max but wash in up Liquid is washing up Liquid so I don't really care.

I don't buy any brands ever always own brands. (Except instant coffee)

Pamosonic · 02/01/2025 18:24

Can't say I notice too much difference from one rice to the next but Tesco rice is fine yeah. I buy brown rice from there anyway.

StarMincePies · 02/01/2025 18:29

Definitely want long grain - I find basmati goes too sticky in the

... rice cooker (pressed return too soon).

Definitely needs to be Tesco also sadly as I'm very rural with limited delivery options.

But thank you for the help - all much appreciated!

I'll try the shreddies too.

A 4kg bag is £4.45 for long grain rice (absolutely fine).
Tesco Red label tea is ok.
Dd had heinz beans at her grandma's last week and has declared Tesco are better (I do agree).
I'd just try Tesco own brand and see how you get on. I did this as have Tesco home delivery. I then went down a brand on some I kept them eg porridge oats, tinned tomatoes. I use the really cheap beans in sausage casserole but wouldn't put them on toast.was trial and error.
Dc say cereals are better than the brands for most especially malt wheaties and bran flakes. I can't say as I don't eat cereal.

I don't find the tesco rice as good tbh.

But I do use loads of tesco own brand products, including the washing pods and fabric softener.
Some things I bought today, which, in my opinion are as good as or better than other, more expensive brands;
Tinned tomatoes
Tomato puree
Chickpeas
Lentils
Chia seeds
Baked beans
Herbs/spices
Pasta
Frozen pizza
Tomato ketchup
Salad cream
Worcestershire sauce
Pickled gherkins

Try a few things, I'm sure you'll be happy with the majority.

Lidl own brand Washing Liquid is superb .
Also HB Whizz Laundry liquid is excellent and by far the cheapest.

Mossyflossy · 02/01/2025 19:00

I’ve bought Tesco basmati rice for years. I buy their own brand beans, tinned tomatoes, spaghetti, ketchup, soap powder etc. I’ve recently switched to their brand tea bags. £1.30 for 80 and they’re lovely.

Riapia · 02/01/2025 19:06

It’s well known that Tesco grow their own rice in special paddy fields.
Calming music is played throughout the day. The people working in the fields are forbidden to raise their voices. Tesco rice is known to give people a sense of peace and wellbeing.
Thoroughly recommend it.

OurDreamLife · 02/01/2025 19:10

I stick to Fairy. It’s always on offer in Morrisons or Savers so I guess it will be most shops. The cheaper versions left my clothes feeling like cardboard.

Aldi dishwasher tablets

EcruCardigan · 02/01/2025 19:18

Tesco rice is the same price as Aldi/Lidl. It's fine.
I use Formil washing powder and i'm happy with it.
Quite happy with Tesco own brand most things (baked beans, bog roll etc.)
The Creamfield cheese is crap.
Prefer Lidl but can't be bothered to drive there when I can walk to Tesco.

mrsmacmc · 02/01/2025 19:22

Tesco own baked beans

EcruCardigan · 02/01/2025 19:24

Grower Harvest Long Grain Rice 1Kg - Tesco Groceries 52p
It's probably not the best but it fills bellies cheaply.

chattyness · 02/01/2025 19:48

I buy quite a few of their own brands .Their frozen veg is always good value and handy to have in.I like the tesco basmati rice but I don't have a rice cooker, i just cook it in pan on the stove top. Stockwell teabags are my favourite tea, they taste very much like Tetley tea to me. Growers harvest tinned plum tomatoes are much nicer than leading brands. Tesco honey nut cornflakes are fab and Tesco wheat biscuits instead of weetabix (not stockwell the next brand up) I really like the creamfields mature chedddar and red leicester cheeses and also creamfields natural yoghurt it's onlty 55p for a 500ml pot just now it's thick & delicious, Stockwell tortilla chips are delish, really good value and Tesco potato sticks are also yum. ETA I use their washing up liquid as well it's great

EcruCardigan · 02/01/2025 19:54

i boil the rice too but I boil it for a shorter time and turn of the heat and let it fluff up in the pan.

TianasBayou · 02/01/2025 20:21

Look in the Tesco world foods section for stuff like tinned kidney beans etc. think the brand is STC or similar. Also spices and rice in larger sizes.

EcruCardigan · 02/01/2025 20:24

The lentils are cheaper in the World Foods section and often have a clubcard price.

StarMincePies · 02/01/2025 20:28

Yes - the Stockwell tortilla chips are our favourite! Just probe to being crushed in the delivery crate for some reason. But already a good swap.

Don't get the cheapest pasta unless you have a strong sauce to go over it.
