What age is your son?
Does your bank offer child accounts?

HyggeTygge · 30/12/2024 18:11

Get on the moneysavingexpert.com website and go to "banking and savings". You can look up details for children's savings or current accounts for under-18s and what you need to open them.

Banks can’t discriminate against people who don’t have photo ID so you will be able to get an account from any high street bank. They normally need something else to prove ID such as a benefits statement or letter from a social worker.

they will have a list of acceptable documents on their websites.

will he be managing his accounts on his own or do you have something official in place to help him?

Alwaysanotherwine · 30/12/2024 18:33

just get him a monzo - most kids use that these days

take two mins to set up

slipperypenguin · 30/12/2024 18:51

Monzo requires photo id

DS just opened a 16 - 18 Monzo and had to send a photo of his passport

He is an adult.

Short term get him a hyperjar or similar (pre load card) you manage and make sure you paying all his benefits into one separate account even if in your name eg set up a second current account on your own bank easily online
As he is 18 it s way more complicated
You can apply for deputyship

Are you his appointee for his beneits?

cestlavielife · 30/12/2024 18:57

And get him a passport you will need an id for him and passport last 10 years
If he lacks capacity you can get a letter from gp and it will say he is not required to sign

cestlavielife · 30/12/2024 19:02

For my son sld non verbal no capacity
I am appointee dwp
Allhis benefits go to one account in my name but I can provide it as needed to ss so if monitoring needed for financial assessment it is clear
He has a hyperjar card again my name linked and loaded as needed so his carers can go out with him and buy food tickets whatever

If your ds has capacity and can express thru his communication aid he can sign for poa or third party mandate so depending if he has capacity or not
Does he have capacity or not?

He had passport but his sister lost it house moving it was out of date and it was cancelled anyway. Don't really have the money to get another one.

here is a list of documents that hsbc accept I would assume most banks are the same

He must have funds from his benefits to get new passport at some point.
If he lacks capacity it is not so simple to get an account in his name
So set up accounts ts in your name separate to yours for now.
A current account to to have all his benefits paid in. And his specific outgoings. Eg money to you for lodging etc
You will need this for adult ss financial assessment
A linked pre paid card like hyperjar for out and about tap and pay with his carers
