Payment of CCJ

Hi all any advice would be gratefully received as I’m a bit lost!

  • CCJ in 2020 for a parking fine I wasn’t aware of. The total debt is now around £300.
  • CCJ drops off my credit file Jan 2026 but I need to move house in 2025.
  • My mortgage broker has advised me to pay off the debt in full asap so that it at least shows as “satisfied”.

Am I doing the right thing in paying the CCJ now? Should I offer a lower amount? Keen to get the whole thing sorted asap.

Thanks for reading!!

A CCJ is different to a default.

With a default, you can offer a lower settlement figure and, if accepted, the default will show as being satisfied/partially satisfied and £0 outstanding balance at credit reference agencies. Less damaging than an unpaid default.

With CCJ's, there's no mid ground, credit file wise. You CAN offer a settlement figure to the debt owner and if accepted, they won't pursue you for the remainder - but there will be no update at Credit Reference Agencies at all. It's all or nothing - if you want a CCJ updated to show as Satisfied/£0 owing you need to pay the whole amount.

The mortgage broker has given you the right advice to pay it in full so it shows as Satisfied. If your credit file is your concern, no lower settlement is possible.

Thank you that’s really helpful!! In that case I’ll get on and get it paid.
