Oh shit

Was feeling really chuffed with myself yesterday as I went to bank, paid in money for me to hire a ship, paid a couple of bills and ordered food shop for today which ended up with me only have about £2 in my account.

Anyway, was feeling all organised etc and then just as I got into bed last night I realised that it was the 1st May today and my tv licence and child trust fund go out today.

My mum is going to go the bank first thing and pay in £20 for me, but have just checked online and I am already now showing as -£12 so i'm gonna get charged now aren't I ?

How much do Barclays charge nowadays ?

oh poo

CrackerOfNuts · 01/05/2008 08:28

Does anyone know when they will take the charge ? Do they wait until I have more money go in, or will they take it today ?? If so that will make me overdrawn again.

I'm so pissed off with myself, I have been doing so well with my money, how could I bloody forget.

I would ring them and explain - they might be able to cancel the charges. Just say it was a genuine error and that you have paid in money this morning

NatalieJane · 01/05/2008 08:32

You may find if you ring them and explain it was an oversight, especially if this is a one off, they may well not charge you.

The one time I ever went over my overdraught limit (by about £3!) I rang and explained what had happened (was expecting a payment to go in that didn't) and they let it go, no charges at all.

figroll · 01/05/2008 10:34

No advice on your charges from Barclays, but hire a ship? That sounds interesting. I have tried hard to think what you really mean, but I can't come up with anything and I am nosey!!!

PrincessPeaHead · 01/05/2008 10:35

skip I'd guess figroll

nervousal · 01/05/2008 10:37

phone them and explain. Lat month we went overdrawn by about £200 for 1 day and were cahrged £60odd. I called them straight away nad they cancelled the charges.

Oliveoil · 01/05/2008 10:38

phone them and grovel, say it was an error etc

can you arrange an overdraft for this kind of thing? we have an overdraft facility that we never use but it is handy for when things overlap like this

ours is £1000 (they keep bumping it up without us asking ) but you can organise them for £50 or so

figroll · 01/05/2008 10:38

Oh yes - I hadn't thought of a skip!!

Cappuccino · 01/05/2008 10:38

have they taken the standing orders/ direct debits out early?

Mercy · 01/05/2008 10:39

lol at hiring a ship!

SOrry Cracker, hope the bank will be sympathetic and not charge you.

ManxMum · 01/05/2008 10:56

I don't think they are allowed to charge for going overdrawn atm, a la Martin Lewis.

Ring bank, ask nicely, THEN demand that the do not take the charge from your account, (the have to give notice, 28 days, I think)

My bank called mine an 'arrangement fee', but I pointed out that I hadn't asked them to arrange anything!

I hate D/D's they mess your finances up big time.

mishymoo · 01/05/2008 11:01

I might be completely wrong here but, I didn't think any charges were applied until you went overdrawn by £20?

I also second what MAnxMum has said about Martin Lewis - the banks lost their appeal recently in court about the bank charges / arrangement fees they make against customers.

ZoeC · 01/05/2008 11:01

If your mum pays in cash, you should be fine. Barclays won't charge you for being overdrawn unless you are overdrawn at the end of the day. And even then, they don't charge for the first £15 anyway. I'll try and find where I read that.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 01/05/2008 11:02

hire a ship!?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 01/05/2008 11:02
Grin
nervousal · 01/05/2008 11:05

they are allowed to charge you a reasonable amount though. The court case isn't over as far as I understand - its just that courts have agreed that bank charges should be fair.

ZoeC · 01/05/2008 11:08

No, sorry can't find it. I know it was included in some information with a statement once some time ago, plus on the first of the month we have a standing order that goes in, then a ton of bills that go out all on the same day - that happens in a different order so at times during the day I will be overdrawn by varying amounts, then the money goes in so by the end of the day it balances and I have never been charged for that.

CrackerOfNuts · 01/05/2008 17:04

Thanks all, LOL at ship. I did mean skip yes

My dad has said what someone else said here, that because my account will be in credit at end of business today then I shouldn't be charged anything so thats good.

avenanap · 01/05/2008 17:09

Unless you're with Twatwest! I realised I'd gone over, I went in on the same day to transfer the money, I was charged anyway. Why? because I went in and transferred it at 2:34, not at 2:30, which is their cut off time, which has changed from the last time I was in this pickle from 3pm!!!!
