Can you get a UK citizen who is mentally ill to come to the UK to be looked after by its family

The person in question is not a minor. Can you do that? And if so how? Any experience?

What exactly do you mean? Is the person willing to come to the UK?

Not sure yet but I suspect after treatment probably. It is my young SIL. She cannot look after herself and has had to be sectionned twice in her country. Now we do not want her to go back to living on her own as she can't look after herself. No one else in her familly want/can look after her, so there is only DH and I, but we are here.

Depends where she's coming from. Generally, if an ex-colony and if born after a certain date (sorry, can't remember the detail), there's a presumption the person can come over.

The other usual routes (work permit, study permit or vacation) presumably wouldn't apply.

Try the Home Office immigration service website.

is she a UK citizen..what is her 'own country' then?

needahand · 29/04/2008 11:34

Sorry I made a mistake in my OP. I meant she is a EU citizen, so no not former colony. She is currently living in her own country

Will try the home office site and perhaps call them. Thanks for the suggestion. Everything is so mad with that at the moment, I can't think straight or proactively.

mumblechum thanks for the HO website. I have had a look and it seems we will be able to get her to come her although I will call them to have more specific advice.
