Barclaycard minimum payment question

Hi,

I’m going through a long divorce and ended up putting solicitor fees (almost £14k) on a credit card - interest free with Barclaycard. Plan was to pay it back out of the settlement but, unfortunately, I ended up getting rid of the solicitor due to spiralling costs and the fact I was struggling to support my daughter and pay for everything for the family home. I was left with very little each month to live in after the solicitor sent me bills, every month, ranging from £300 to £900!! This went on for 3 years! Just constant letters back and forth. Stbx is getting a bigger share than me as, due to tragic events in my personal life and a stressful job, I just couldn’t see it through and take it to court. He is keeping most other assets and the house is going 50/50. He also hadn’t paid a penny on child maintenance.

Anyway, the credit card is interest free until June 25. Barclaycard are asking for minimum payments each month of £520 - £600 a month so I still feel like I’m paying for a solicitor and struggling. The family home is up for sale (mortgage free) and I plan on paying the credit card off out of the house sale and should have enough left to buy a smaller house outright, or with a very small mortgage. Should the house not sell by June, I’ll just move the credit card debt to another interest free card.

Is there a way to reduce the minimum monthly repayments while this is going on? Even by 50%? I feel I’m still paying a solicitor! And, yes, I’m furious that the solicitor did nothing for me (at £300 an hour) apart from drag it out!

A loan would be too much too and the interest is a lot more - hence why I chose an interest free CC.

Any advice would be great as I’d like my disposable income to rise up a bit, especially as the house needs a bit of painting and tidying up to help it sell!

I’m still not divorced either, even though I filed for divorce in December 2020!! My boss filed for divorce 6 months ago and it’s almost complete and his wife is getting half of everything!! All done amicably without much use of a solicitor!

Look at the minimum payment as a percentage of the balance as it can vary between cards from 1 to 2.5%.

If you're struggling to pay that amount and can't free up extra money by reducing other costs then if you could transfer the balance with a lower minimum payment percentage that might help in the short term.
