Finally feeling positive about money

So today dh and I had our usual monthly money meeting. We’ve been doing this religiously for the last 4 years after finding ourselves in the worst financial position. A failed business, loss of income and a whole myriad of other disasters led to us being £157k in debt on top of our mortgage. This was at the of 2019.

we were determined to pay every penny back and we’ve grafted, taken in extra work, sold stuff etc etc. As of today , we’ve paid off 81k and now owe 76k on top of mortgage. Still a huge sum to most but it feels so much better. We can also see the end of this now. We’re both 46 and this will be done by 50. I actually feel positive about money for the first time in years.

Thank you. It probably sounds crazy given that we still owe so much, but it just feels like we’ve turned a massive corner

Well done 👏….massive achievement…..we paid our house off at 48 years….but didn’t start saving for retirement until we were 50 …..,I’m 59 now and will retire next year….so you are definitely on track OP

That's brilliant - well done! :) Takes a lot of discipline and commitment.

I'm really impressed and so pleased for you, you must feel an enormous sense of satisfaction.

Debt is so so easy to get into and roll away with.

That's amazing OP. I see lots of posts about people on really good incomes with tons of debt and some of the advice makes me cringe. The only way to get out of debt and stay out of debt is to do it the hard way, as you've been doing.
Easy wins like remortgaging or consolidating rarely work.
It's amazing how much you've cleared already. Just imagine how comfortable you will be once it's all gone

That is an amazing achievement. You should both be very proud of yourselves

Oldandcobwebby · 14/11/2024 09:53

That is incredible teamwork. I'm so proud of you! If you keep working together like this when you have successfully paid off your debts, you will soon amass a considerable sum in savings.
