my sil is in hospital after suffering a stroke 2 weeks ago.she is a single parent to two children age 16 and 21.
the children are struggling to keep everything afloat while she is in hospital and do not know where to turn.
could someone please point me in the direction of a useful website or give me some advise so i can pass it on to them.
i don't have a clue about benefits.my sil will need care when she eventually comes home which could be months.
thank you in advance.

I know a reasonable amount about sickness benefits and could help you think it all through if you like?

It sounds like your sil will be entitled to Disability Living Allowance. A word, or several of warning, the form is hell, they reject a lot of applications only to grant them immediately on appeal and it's very, very slow. I would make it your first priority to get this form requested and started. If this is your first foray into benefits I really would go to the CAB for advice filling it in.

If your sil is of working age and has made NI contributions then I think she'll probably also get incapacity benefit.

Depending on what rate of DLA she gets, any savings, other income, she may get income support to top-up the amount of incapacity she gets in order to meet the amount of money the law says she needs to live on.

If one of the children is likely to end up doing a lot of the caring then they could get carers allowance.

If she goes onto income support then Council tax benefit and housing benefit will come into play also. Remember these are dealt with by the council usually - not the benefits office.

dwp.gov.uk
direct.gov.uk
jobcentreplus.gov.uk

are all good - and can give quite detailed information if you've got time to hunt.

Most of the forms you'll need can be downloaded from those websites.

Hope this helps.

squigglywig.thank you
i'm not sure what she claims now to be honest.i know she has a part-time job and does a few hours a week but i don't know if she claims tax credits or income support.
i think that i need to visit the cab with her son to see what they can do.he works full time but her daughter is still as school.
her sons girlfriend(student) has moved in temporarily to help with the day to day stuff and taking things to hospital etc.
i will check out those websites and see what i can find.
thank you so much

No worries. Good luck with it all.

If she is on income support then you must let the office know as soon as possible. Going into hospital can affect how much money she'd get and you don't want to be in a position of having to pay them back!
