Adult child/rent changes?

Hi everyone, I tried googling but couldn’t find a clear answer and now I’m sitting here worried 😭

Something came up in conversation with a friend: she thinks because my daughter is 20, the housing association would class her as an adult and raise my rent as it’s two adults living here now (a two bed flat).

I pay my rent, council tax, have no benefits/housing benefit and we’re both on the electoral roll. Daughter is a full time online uni student.

Have I missed something here? Should I contact the housing association to double check? I’ve always assumed everything is up to par as they knew I have a daughter when I moved in, but now I’m panicking wondering if they’ll be asking me for backdated money or something. I’m struggling financially at the moment and the last thing I need is another hit, but I’d like to have my situation completely regular too.

Sounds like they have the bedroom tax in mind, In which case, It won’t affect you if you don’t receive benefits.

What kind of tenancy do you have? Introductory? Assured?

I would have to fish out the contract to double check but I’m pretty sure it’s assured.

Non dependants are taken into account when you are receiving Universal credit for your rent - used to be housing benefit but now for working age people its UC

Non dependants would have a set amount of rent to pay towards the household, and then the government deduct this amount from the UC towards rent that they pay

so if your rent was £600 per month and 2 beds, your non dependant living with you was earning £500 per week UC would deduct £113.50 per week from your benefit as they'd expect your non dependant to pay that to you. - whether you sort the shortfall or get it from your non dependant is up to you - your benefit towards your rent would suddenly be £108

So essentially as long as I’m not receiving any benefits I should be fine and everything is in order?

If you're not receiving benefits then your daughter living with you in the second bedroom will not affect you.
