Anyone else recieved Tax Credit review for an old claim?

I haven't claimed Tax Credits for 9 yrs, last period was April to August as DS was leaving education. A very small overpayment was made as DS found work before period ended, this was paid back immediately. 9 yrs on, I've recieved a Tax Credit review letter for that same period. Has this happened to anyone else?

@1978Red Yes. Not personally but a friend of mine not only had their claim reviewed but they were chased for a significant sum in arrears. Similar time lapse to yours.

In her case they made it worse by putting the case on hold only to reopen it again 6 years later.

I've heard of others too. Some sort of a hit squad looking at old cases?

I've just had one too from 2015 asking me if the information is correct.
I can't remember that far back so I've no idea.
It does say in the letter that if it is found to be an overpayment then they won't try to recover it. Not sure what's the point or why it's come almost 10 years later!
Hopefully they will decide they owe me thousands and it will pay for a lovely Christmas....I live in hope!

It's bizarre. I'm kind of hoping for the same 😀

Crazy ? I await with bated breath then ? Do you think everyone will get one ??

Teado · 28/10/2024 19:52

I got one from 2011-2012 earlier this year. I’m a meticulous record keeper but I only keep documents such as P60s and award notices for 10 years so I’ve no idea if it is right.

If they bother me again I’ll invoke the complaints procedure. It’s bad, there are folk who will panic and get into debt to pay it without knowing if it’s correct

Honeyrose88 · 15/11/2024 16:51

Hi there,

I’ve just had this too. Did anything come from it? I can’t work out why they’d bother if they aren’t wanting an overpayment? I don’t think I worked that year as I had a baby under 1 but it’s so long ago and I did 0 hour work I could have but not to the tune of £7k earnings. I’m not sure what to do with it to be honest and I’m a huge worrier thanks to OCD & GAD everything is catastrophic for me so this letter isn’t great.

I hope all worked out okay for you anyway.

Did you receive the second letter confirming they aren’t wanting any money back? I am so unnerved by it. I can’t remember that far back, I looked on my gateway account and it only showed until 2018 anything prior doesn’t exist.

socks1107 · 15/11/2024 16:57

I did and didn't get a letter to say money would've be recovered, I got the opposite for a claim in 2009. I'm now paying that back monthly but I made them stretch it out to ten years maybe I should stop and complain ?

Honeyrose88 · 15/11/2024 17:03

Did it say you wouldn’t be ordered to pay an overpayment back? Because if not I’d keep paying it just incase. I never liked the tax credit system, especially when your zero hours it was really difficult to manage how to know what you’d earn so I ended up with an overpayment the one year I was receiving it but I cleared that years ago.

DDC · 15/11/2024 17:20

No I haven't received any follow up yet but I have received another letter for 2012 this time! They must be working their way backwards.
Both letters say they won't recover any overpayment so I'm just ignoring them. I think they are correct anyway.
I've already repaid overpayments from other years a long time ago.

Thanks for your reply. I find it odd. Wish I hadn’t bothered with tax credits, it’s always been more trouble than it was worth. I have paid over payments previously also. This one I’m not sure of as I had an under 1 year old so don’t think I worked during this period but I can’t be certain I didn’t pick up work but the amount showing would be way off if I did earn I think, again not sure so don’t know if it’s best to leave it as it is if there aren’t any repercussions later down the line. I’d rather over state my income than understate it to risk a mistake and it was correct and I just can’t remember.

Did anyone have an outcome of this? I got this letter today & I can’t figure out why

WhoAreYouTalkingTo · 21/05/2025 11:21

If they are sending people letter saying that they have overpaid them, but aren't going to make them pay it back, then I want a bloody refund for the £10k I've had to pay them back because it was 9 years later and I had moved twice and remarried and couldn't prove otherwise

socks1107 · 21/05/2025 20:42

Same! Im paying £35 a month and have been for 3 years now with another 7 to go…

I have £650 left of the debt. I've been paying them for 9 years now. They threatened to take me to court so I set up a standing order of £40 a month! They rang me after a year and told me that I had to increase it to £55 otherwise I would take too long to pay it back as it has to be done within 10 years. I'm taking every damn day of those 10 years.
