NHS pay increased backdate

Hello! Is anyone here on maternity leave and works for the NHS? Ive been on maternity leave since November 23. We received a pay award this month that was supposed to be back dated to April and received in this months pay. I checked my payslip this morning and noticed my annual salary has increased but I’ve not received any backdated pay! I’ve checked with another colleague on maternity leave and she didn’t get anything either. Surely we’re entitled to the money we would’ve received had we got the pay increase in April? I’ve contacted payroll but they’re vvvv slow and I’m sure have thousands of people complaining!
Anyone else in this situation or have any advice?

I'm om mat leave from NHS, started 02/24 and have had it averaged across the year (so on my last month of SMP & OMP). My payslip for this month shows a small amount of back pay (£147 for a part time b6 salary of that's any help to anyone!)

Hi. I contacted my payroll as I did not get any back pay as well and I was told:

"You have been on mat leave since April and therefore not been paid any basic pay or HCA

The backpay is based purely on this, so if you have not been working at the trust from April, you do not qualify for the backpayment."

Thanks, so basically because we physically haven't been working we're not entitled to anything back dated.
What aload of rubbish, we shouldn't be penalised because it falls on the same year as our maternity. 😭

If you were receiving OMP pay in April, whether you were physically at work or not, you are entitled to the back pay as if you were at work. Therefore I would be contacting your union for support / advise.
If you did not qualify for OMP and only recieved Statutory from April then unfortunately you would not receive the back pay. Hope this helps.

I have been wondering the very same! I work in the NHS and received the news that I had received a payrise backdated to April 2024 and that the backdated pay would be in October's pay. I went on maternity leave mid-May. My October payslip reflects the payrise of one month only. I'm hoping that the part of May I worked is also backdated as well as maternity pay! I have contacted payroll for clarification but from what I've read, maternity pay should increase.

WhiteHorse92 · 26/10/2024 00:21

I've been on maternity leave since 20/12/23. I didn't get any backpay in October payslip either. To be honest, I wasn't expecting anything because I assumed as mat pay is based on earnings in the qualifying weeks and those weeks were way before when the pay rise is applicable from that I wasn't entitled to anything. But then quite a few people saying you should be entitled to something if any OMP received since April and I received OMP up until middle of June. I'm going to see if my union have explained it anywhere because it's all so confusing!

Hi. The same thing happened to me and one of my colleague we were on maternity leave between June 2023 to May 2024 anyways they are saying we’re not entitled. Not only that the whole period I was on maternity leave I never received the London living wage they took off that from my payment and my unsocial hours because my contract was on the weekend. It’s not fair. I’ll be complaining and they owe me a lot of money. Bring pregnant doesn’t and shouldn’t change anything. Let me know how you get on.

being on maternity isn’t any different to being at work.. I think we should get all the benefits this doesn’t sound fair.

Thanks for this thread! I used to be a staff nurse, but retired at the end of April. This month I had a random payment of £75 from the health trust I used to work for, and couldn't work out why.

Now I know - I would imagine you should also get a payrise back dated.

Hi! No unfortunately not, I’m still waiting to hear from payroll - they seem to have no idea what’s going on. My friend in the midlands (also nhs b6) went on mat leave 10 days after me and received about £230 labelled as “Omp arrs” so I’m hoping my trust is just slow. If you only went off in June you should definitely be entitled to something. Have you spoken to your payroll?

Ahh that's annoying, my mum works for the NHS and received her back pay last month, I'm not directly employed by NHS I work for ocs which works for the NHS so we receive the same payrises ect as everybody else, I get paid in the next few days so I have my fingers crossed, I'll see what I get in the next few days 😊 I hope you get it, from what iv read all over Google searches I'm sure we will they'de have to recalculate our Weekly average earnings ect x

Handex · 06/11/2024 20:01

Payroll actually got back to me and said they have to manually do this so maternity staff haven't had theirs yet, they aim to get done by Jan pay but my trust have said hopefully December.

WhiteHorse92 · 09/11/2024 14:45

Update. I've just had a letter sent from my trust apologising that staff on maternity leave didn't get their backpay in October payslip and should have done. We're getting the backpay into bank account by 15th November and will be on November payslip. Doesn't say how much though.

SoNew94 · 17/11/2024 15:13

Update: Payroll emailed me a few days ago saying they have now received authorisation to process the back pay for those on maternity leave which should be received in November or Decembers pay cheque!

Hi!
I'm in a similar boat to you, starting mat leave the 12th Dec 2023. Just wondering if you got your back pay in the end? I'm in Wales and all normal staff got back pay this month, but I haven't. Want to know if this is wrong before contacting payroll... thanks :)

Hi,

Yes I did. Went into my bank account on 15th Nov as 'wage advance'. If everyone else got the backpay this month, maybe you'll get it next month? Wouldn't hurt to ask your payroll dept though.

WhiteHorse92 · 22/11/2024 10:43

Oddly, I got my payslip today and seems the backpay I got on the 15th was only half the backpay. I have a higher amount as 'OMP' on my payslip and then half of that taken off as a deduction for the backpay I've already been paid. Not sure why they paid me half the backpay last week and then the rest on this payslip 🤔. All the OMP must be backpay because I haven't received OMP since June.

Mumofboys130513 · 26/11/2024 14:25

I work for the nhs and I’m on maternity. I phoned payroll and they told me I wouldn’t get a backdated payment because I went off on maternity leave December of last year and I wasn’t working as of April this year. Was a bit frustrating because I’m technically still employed by them I haven’t left

So odd because I've also been on maternity since December and I've received backpay. Are trusts just making up their on rules!?
