Smashed phone screen-what would be the best option?

I’m a not even a year into new contract and I pay £40 per month.
My phone is Samsung G S23.
Sadly it came out of my pocket few weeks ago and the screen/ lcd display is cracked.

I never ever broke a phone in the past, this is so unusual for me as I’m super careful and the phone has case and screen protector..

It looked not so bad on the first look as the crack was on it top part where it shows signal bars however it has black dead pixels now and these are spreading and more of the screen is now getting black.
I immediately looked into replacing the screen and I went to specific stores and I was told it would be around £270 for a new display and that’s if they would actually manage to get one as apparently always impossible to get and takes long time to order and arrive.
I can not afford that, I may as well pay a £150 more and I get new Samsung s23 Fe which I originally wanted but it wasn’t out yet..
I was also looking into upgrading but there is a fee of £490 as my contract ends at Xmas 2025.
I don’t know what to do?
Any ideas?
It’s still fully usable but there is glass peeling under the screensaver.
You can see from pics below the dead pix are spreading.

No idea, so expensive phones are nowadays. I use a Samsung s21 FE and I have a front and back shockproof silicone case off Ebay for £3.99. I have also dropped this phone many times and no cracked screen or damaged not even a scratch due to how good the cases are! If you do buy another phone grab one of those cases!

Does the Samsung have facilities/functions you need or really really want that are not present on a £120 Motorola?

Chocolatedreamss · 21/10/2024 16:53

@PrettyYellow30 thats was my last phone SG21FE I loved that one!
I dropped that one many times too and never got any damage..
I agree, so pricey hence I don’t want to pay £270 just for the display..
I always have silicone cases on phones and glass protector on.
I suppose I read if the phone lands on the top edge ( that’s what happened) is very easily to damage the display..
I will be looking into Black Friday deals as I rather get new phone if I have To even I can’t afford as the damage is getting worse…

@Bromptotoo i don’t want to sound silly but yeah I always had Samsung phones, I never had any in last 20 years..so yeah I definitely prefer them..as very much used to them. I had once HTC phone and sadly nope.
Probably will buy a cheaper samsung A line but I don’t want second hand phone as my teen had two second hand phones and were not good, slow, laggy, overcharging..

Could try ismash or a company like that? Was about £100 for a new iPhone screen

Bromptotoo · 21/10/2024 17:22

@Chocolatedreamss a quick look on Amazon suggests cheapest Samsungs are around the £120 mark. If you cannot exit the current deal for another year could you live with that?

We've bought SIM free/unlocked phones for years and they're fine but we only need to make calls/texts and take 'snaps', maybe basic web stuff plus hot spot for the laptops away from home.

OTOH my son took that recommendation from me after losing a v expensive Google Pixel on a drunken ride home by taxi. He says he'll never listen to me again about anything phone realted.....

Chocolatedreamss · 21/10/2024 17:52

@Topsy1976 well yeah, I thought it would be under £100 or around but apparently the display is some specific and not cheap, it’s not just the glass but the whole display- I went to 3 different shops and I also contacted Samsung, the all said the same quote.
I know it’s not urgent urgent but it is getting worse and I doubt the phone will last until next upgrade.
Hence I’m not sure whether I shall buy a proper phone to have it for next few years or something cheap to tight me up until next upgrade.
Also I failed to mention the phone needs to fast and very responsive and so I wasn't looking into cheap phones.

No advice @Chocolatedreamss just sympathy - somehow managed to smash front and back with protector case and glass cover on! And quoted £500 to replace both sides...I'm using mine til it breaks...

52crumblesofautumn · 21/10/2024 18:20

One lesson I have learned is that phone insurance is probably worth it for me!

Chocolatedreamss · 21/10/2024 18:49

@52crumblesofautumn I looked into it but there is a high excess. I will use until it works and then I will see.

The repair prices are crazy - not surprised the insurance is - it's a right pain.
