i'm asking for my uncle,

he's managed to acquire quite a bit of debt - iiro £5K I know it might not sound much to a lot of you but to him it is, he's thinking that he'll have to go down the bankruptcy route, but, i've suggested we try writing a letter to his creditors first and explain the situation, & ask to have reduced payments and freeze all intrest/charges.

He's currently working out of the country & does this for approx 9 months a year - works on the cruise ships for an american company, so at the minute his wages are very poor - below out min wage as such he's not managing and of course things are bouncing, bank account is being charged etc.

anyhow I've said i'll prepare the letters etc but obv he needs to sign the letters etc.

questions are:

  1. where to find said letters & a guide as to how to lay out the I&E sheet.
  2. given the current climate of things how likely is it they'll accept a revised payment plan?
  3. to my knowledge he can't obtain any more credit - rating is shockingly bad. so consolidation is not an option
  4. does anyone know the lowest ,limit for bankruptcy - I thought I was 7K but not 100% on it.

any other advise you can give would be appreciated. he's not back in this country until early may at the earliest, if not will be june, but obv time is of the essence as he's getting threatening letters re court summons etc. it's also quite worrying for nan as everything is going to her house.

Hello there.

My advise would be to contact payplan. I found them extreemly helpful. I said i wanted to try and sort things out myself and they emailed me a big pack with example letters and how to go about things. I have managed to get interest stopped and small payments to my creditors each month.

Try:

www.payplan.com/

Hope this is helpful

I think that you can only negotiate this through the citizens advice bureau or a debt councilor.

CAB site orwww.debtadvicetrust.org/debt/debt-help.html

On that CAB site there is a step by setp guide on how to work out his priorities and negotiate repayments here also links for more info.

thanks for your help guys,

i'm just waiting for him to come back with a full account of what his expenses are each month. I think this is an issue which has been going on for a good few years but he's been ignoring.
