Myself and my long term partner (ex) have split up, we have decided that he will pay move out but pay a share of the mortgage and I will stay in the property until both the children are 18 and then sell. This hasn’t been done legally/through the courts just something we have both agreed on.

My question is since we will both be down as owning the property will this have an affect on some benefits I can claim such as single persons council tax discount and working tax credit etc? I work full time however I’ll obviously be paying my half of the mortgage, all the bills and some personal debt so will be a big financial strain, I’ve never had to claim a benefit in my life (not that it’s anything wrong with it) just a bit clueless and trying to find out if there’s any help out there!

Council tax - no. Unsure about WTC. Best thing you can do is put your details (as they will be) into a benefits calculator.

Congratulations on what sounds like a civilised split!

Working tax credits don't exist for new claims.

The property you live in is ignored as capital for benefits purposes.

When he moves out you can definitely claim the single person discount for Council Tax.

You might be eligible for Universal Credit - contact Help to Claim and they can do a benefit check for you: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/claiming/helptoclaim/

It will depend on your salary and how many children you have and their ages.

Tax credits are ending. Do an
online benefit calculator for universal credit.

Council tax discount is based on who lives there not who owns it. You need to open a universal credit claim for any other help if eligible, but you can't usually get help with mortgage payments

Danikm151 · 17/10/2024 08:45

It will be Universal credit if you’re eligible. It won’t cover mortgage payments so depending on your income you may or may not qualify,
single person discount you just contact the council as soon as he’s moved out. Make sure he takes himself off the electoral register at your property.
