Smart meter nearly caused fire - compensation

Hi we had a smart meter fitted and one day it started smoking and we had a full on emergency situation when the fire brigade said to get out the house. Basically it was fitted badly and now the supplier doesn’t fit them. They’ve offered us £250 good will gesture but we think it should be more - esp as we have a vulnerable child in the house which they know. We were out of the house for 3 hours waiting for it to be deemed safe, had to camp out at neighbours and was stressful for all concerned. They’d even dragged their feet getting us back on the grid. Anyone been in similar situation.

That must have been distressing.

What was your actual monetary loss? You should claim for that and a bit more for the inconvenience/stress.

What have you actually lost though? While distressing, as the poster above said what have you actually lost?

Brainded · 15/10/2024 14:02

Well, nothing was damaged and it was 3hoirs not 3months. I think the 250 is enough to be honest!

If you need to repaint the walls or similar, they should cover this. If you had any direct monetary loss such as being unable to WFH whilst you spent 3 hours outside, that seems fair too.

You were inconvenienced, but money won't fix that will it. You are scared by what COULD have happened (but didn't) but money won't fix that either. So if money won't solve the problem why try to claim?

Compensation has been offered for the inconvenience, you can't claim more for the 'what if' - I would just be grateful that you didn't end up in the situation where you would have been claiming for more tbh.

£250 is plenty.

Your house didn't set on fire, and you was out of the house for 3 hours not 3 days.
They won't offer anymore and you don't really have a leg to stand on.

Hi.
Can I ask you when you had the fire was it the meter that went on fire or the wires coming into it ?

DeliciousApples · 15/11/2024 22:06

Compensation for a flight being delayed three hours appears to be £220-£350. Depending on distance so that's not relevant!!

So I would expect that and for them to repaint or repair the smoke damaged cupboard or whatever was damaged by the firemen if they used equipment to make the house safe.

What an awful fright you must have had. I'd have been terrified. I think that's possibly due another amount of compensation.

So I'd suggest the higher figure of £350 plus repairs might be fair? Or £250 per person affected?

Dunno though as I have no experience of such things. If you ask a lawyer that'll just cost you more so it's not worth it.
