HMRC fraud, now lower UC payment!

So my tax code changed last month, thought it was due to changing jobs recently but it turns out HMRC think I have another job!
Called them up and they tell me they will investigate but no timeline, great!
Anyway I get some UC top up and didn't think at the time but now realise UC believe I earned more money than I did and so I'm down about £150 this month.
Of course I rang UC and the lady on the phone told me to leave a note on my journal, which I did but still awaiting on a reply.
Anyone have any experience of this at all? I'm hoping I'll get the money back eventually but that doesn't help me this month.

Btw not asking for help just wondering how things will work as it's not a usual situation and I guess from HMRC/UC view I could be the one committing fraud!

HMRC are bleeding useless. Can you ring and insist this is investigated? Someone else could be using your NI number (ID fraud) so this is definitely something they should look at. Have you got a Personal Tax Account online? You can contest a change of tax of tax code on it, putting your reasons why it is wrong. They do pick up those messages quite quickly when I've done it.

So someone is running a salary through your NI number? I’d do some digging myself OP, if you download the Hmrc app then you can find out who this second employer is. If it’s close by this is probably someone you know. If much further afield identity theft.

there's a charity tax aid who will put you through to someone at HMRC urgently or anyone else who can help. also speak to UC as often as you need to. don't lose out on your money taxaid.org.uk/

You can call UC again and explain you've put a note on your journal and they will chase it up for an agent to respond quicker to you.

Did you receive a P45 from your old job ?

If they haven't sent the P45 submission to HMRC and your new job as entered you as a new employee then HMRC will think that you have two jobs.

Can you log into your Government Gateway account and see if you are listed as being employed at two firms at the same time.

If you haven't received a P45 you need to chase the payroll department at your old job and ask them to send the submission with the correct leaving date on, then you can chase up with HMRC and the Universal Credit.

You need to get this investigated urgently

There is a chance this is the start of identity hacking. Make sure you have alerts set up for clear score or other credit check agency.

I would check if you notice anything suspicious on www.gov.uk/check-income-tax-current-year

This happened to me, it took about a month to sort out.

Thank you, I've rang HMRC a couple of times and it is under investigation. The company who have claimed I work for them don't have any contact details apart from an address in London ( I'm in the midlands) no phone or website I can find apart from one in the same name in the USA.
I've gone through everything in my tax account and all seems ok apart from this.
I know that from when I called up the so called employment has now ended. Will be keeping a close eye around the same payment day this month too, I shouldn't have to and hoping it's just a case of an employer inputting the wrong NI number but I'm doubting it.
