UC transition notice

We had one of these today. On tax credits, DH is self employed. One teen doing GCSEs another a student living at home age 19.

I'm on PiP and cont based ESA in the support group.

Any pitfalls or advice welcome, we have until the first week of Jan to start it. It seems unlike TC they have an 'assessment period" which starts the day after you do the claim.

We should get the transitional protection. Have no housing costs. DH at present gets carers credit although earns too much for carers allowance.

I've read it is best to start the claim a few days after the TC payment is in, as that stops straightaway? And there is a CAB help to claim service

Put the claim in on the same day you get your TC payment. That way there will be less of a gap between payments.

You might end up owing tax credits. They overpaid mine by a £1,000 when I migrated to universal credit.....sigh

Apply as soon as you have had your TC payment, from what I remember it usually takes 6 weeks for you to get your first UC payment but once you've applied you can ask for an advance to see you through til you get your first payment (which is usually the amount they predict you will be receiving per month)

Thing is, in the nest few weeks DH is due a bit payment for a project he has been working on, would it not be better to wait until that is paid as it will wipe it all out?

It's really different from TC which goes on the yearly profit.

Yes, I think we do have an overpayment which they are taking out atm, presuming that will continue to be the case

I should mention that this large payment will be largely wiped out by costs but it might not seem like it. I will send DH the stuff online about UC and SE to see what he thinks.

I am transitioning at the moment from ESA. I waited until as close to the deadline as possible and applied right after I had received my ESA and child tax credit.

The whole thing has worried me but there is a helpline number on your migration notice.

I had my first meeting at the job centre today after transitioning. It went fine and I was in and out within 5 minutes.

The day after is better as applying for UC immediately stop tax credits, so you could have to pay money back

I think it may be easier to start on the 1st of the month because of Dh's self employment, it will make things easier that way with dates etc, thanks though.
