Bank fraud and scam texts

Not sure what category this belongs to so applogies if it's the wrong one but I just reported a £350 fraudulent payment on my account and got told that it was partly my fault because I responded to a Google Pay verification request! The number of times we have to agree to payments or use OTPs in daily life means it's now too easy for scammers to get through normal filters. I got a shock at being told that I was lucky the bank would refund the money and it's made me question my entire approach to banking online. If it's that easy to lose £350 then I don't want to be put in a position to have any text communication from my bank ever again. Has this happened to anyone else recently? In the same week I had a PCN scam text message which I saw was fake and reported but I now feel super uneasy about my whole financial situation 😬

i am struggling to understand the situation, is it that you got a text message asking you to confirm if a £350 payment was you and you said yes? But it wasn’t you?

humans are the weakest link when it comes to banking so as much as it may feel like stopping with technology if you do you are inviting more risk in your life.

chalk it up to experience and just double check next time you get a message asking you to confirm something.

I only ever confirm if I know what the payment is. But yes, I've had a few requests which weren't me! Normally the page has a little, 'not you? Tell us!' Button on it which I press so they can investigate.

Ultimately a company could only request this with some of your details (often card details) so I'd be checking you haven't let your cards out of your sight lately/if you've purchased anything from a slightly dodgy website. Personally, I'd cancel my card and order a new one too.

But what I don't get is that the amount didn't appear in the Google Pay request. I would have balked at £350 in a well-known high street shop but the Google Pay text message only had a code - that's pretty risky given how many transactions you make on a day to day basis.

Were you shopping online when your scam text came through ? If I wasn’t shopping at the time then the text would scream scam to me.
When I shop and get a OTP request, I can choose app or text. Is that a choice with your bank ?

I can't remember what I was doing - but I know I'd been trying to move money to my Monzo account and had some activity on Vinted. I just think it's really shitty that while I need to provide all of my card details including the CVC to buy anything, they just need authorisation through a text message to get access to my bank account. It's been made too easy for them.
