RECENTLY SELF EMPLOYED SINGLE, GAINFULLY SELF EMPLOYED

Hi everybody,

i am a single mum of two, currently on UC and recently left my job to start my own business which has been granted the “start up” period so I am gainfully self employed. My business isn’t something that will make money for at least the first 6 months, I was previously working 18 hours a week employed and earning £818 a month, I then received UC and got an additional £889 from them.

i have just had my first payment from UC and after only earning £140 this month in my first month SE I am due to receive £969.29. I have been scouring the internet for answers as before I started my business I was under the impression if I was deemed gainfully self employed I wouldn’t be affected by the minimum income floor. I made my work coach aware with the nature of my business I am able to work 35 hours with this job as a lot can be done when kids sleep etc..

sorry it’s a long post I’m just stressing as my all my bills are due the 3rd and total £1000 let alone living expenses?

what I’m trying to understand is whether £969 is the maximum I am entitled to? I had honestly thought without MIF I would receive the 35 hours I am working x minimum wage 11.44? For the first 12 months while i don’t have that MIF - can anyone in a similar position advise??😩

I hate having to say this @FNMum but assuming you don't pay rent the numbers look right.

I guess you're over 25 and your two kids were both born after April 2017. Max UC is SA £393.45 + CRE for 2 kids £575.84 = £969.29 .

While employed earnings of £818 would mean, after deducting the higher work allowance of £673. there's only £145 55p. For every £ of that UC is reduced by 55p giving the £889 you mention.

Thank you, I just wish this was explained to me! I actually own a property so have to contribute to half the bills & my ex covers most of them but unfortunately I just won’t have enough.

so really in hindsight I should have stayed employed working maybe slightly less hours to try top this up whilst my business grows!
