Child Benefit NI Credits

Gah... so we're one of those families in which the 'wrong' parent has been claiming child benefit, i.e the parent on the higher income who does not need to accompanying NI credits.

I know this makes me totally stupid but I had no idea that when you claim child benefit, you also get NI credits allocated to your NI record. I found out last week when I checked my NI record and saw that under each year since claiming CB, I have NI credits allocated. I was really confused as to why, especially since I have been paying enough NI through paid employed, and then figured out the link with CB.

Since 2014 (yes, I know....), I've been in full time employment paying my NI contributions through work, I therefore don't need the credits. My DP on the other hand, has been doing most of the childcare for our two kids and has been self-employed/on low earnings. We also checked his NI record last week and he has quite a few years where he has not made, or not made enough, NI contributions towards state pension and could really benefit from the credits.

I spoke to the HMRC who said we can apply for the credits to be transferred. However, it was not very clear whether this was just for the last tax year, or whether it could be backdated all the way back to 2014. The application form itself is quite vague and says late applications might be approved 'if circumstances are reasonable'. I don't know if total ignorance about the existence of NI credits for child benefit claimants is 'reasonable'! Does anyone else have experience of making a NI credit transfer request over a period of multiple years and had any success?

We got my PiL transfered from FiL to MiL - all of them - at a point where the "kids" were grown up, sone of them with kids of their own, and MiL was about to hit state pension age.
Very, very simple.

Yes we backdated for 6 years
You can do it up to the year youngest dc is 12 I think

It did make a difference to DH's NI record and pension forecast

Thanks @DoublePeonies and @jackstini

@jackstini did you transfer the credits from your NI record to your husbands? Do you remember how long it all took?

Only a couple of weeks to come through and yes, transferred from mine to DHs

We did it online here

www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-insurance-credits-for-parents-and-carers-cf411a

Then they sent a letter confirming a d we checked the pension forecast page to confirm it had changed

Thanks @jackstini that's useful to know. I just hope my ignorance of the system counts as 'reasonable circumstances'!

How old is your DP and is there a reasonable expectation that he will earn enough for NI credits when he's not the main carer for young DC?

As people have over 50 years from age 16 to 67/8 to amass the required 35 years of credits there's a few 'spare' so a few missing years won't necessarily affect his pension.

There also used to be the possibility of low earning SE people to voluntarily pay a few pounds a week for a class 2 credit, but I don't know if this is still the case but worth looking into.

I was in the exact same position as your partner and this year I transferred three years credits from 2014-2017. I explained the circumstances in the form and about three weeks later I got a letter to say the NI credits had been transferred to my account.

Summer19 · 26/09/2024 20:29

And I explained my 'reasonable circumstances' were that I simply didn't understand how the child benefit system was awarded
