I worrying parents may be entitled but don't know enough about their finances to check properly.
Both parents over 70, state pensions. Mum gets PIP she lives in a hospital bed in the living room.
She's not the most reliable with accurate info and neither is dad to be fair.
No savings as such
They could be couldn't they?

I know that's vague I'm not sure how best to help them

You can help them apply. You can download the form or even do it over the phone. You would need details of all their income and any savings they have to see if they are elligible.

CoastalCalm · 13/09/2024 18:34

Check on entitled to but if they receive full state pension and own their own home may not be eligible as the top up is only to normal state pension levels - it’s more for people who get no or partial state pension

hytdgfr · 13/09/2024 18:46

That makes sense, thank you. This only came into my head because of the winter fuel situation so I was hoping they might be eligible for help but doesn't look it. Thankyou for replying

They are likely on the old pension so if that is all they have then they would likely be entitled. Depends on what else they have - S2P, private pension, savings.

CoastalCalm · 13/09/2024 18:52

The good news is that PIP income is disregarded as income - try and get hold of their details and apply

Mindymomo · 13/09/2024 18:53

I looked into pension credit for a relative, but basically if they have a private pension of over £100 per month, they won’t be eligible for pension credit. Do your parents get attendance allowance, it sounds like they could get this at the higher level.

PIP means no attendance allowance for mum at least

unsync · 13/09/2024 19:08

If she gets the PIP daily living component, she should be entitled to Pension Credit. You need to check her award.

hytdgfr · 13/09/2024 19:31

Right, this is all quite confusing but I will get to the bottom of it. Thankyou all

So she gets full mobility and half care as she puts it.

PIP, DLA and Attendance Allowance all occupy the same niche in the benefits eco culture but which you get depends on age. If you were on PIP before hitting pension age you'll stay on it afterwards but can access the same 'extras' in Pension Credit as if you get AA later in life.

Edited

Yep I’m aware of that I was just clarifying that the OP stated her mum gets PIP so that means no attendance allowance

So she gets full mobility and half care as she puts it.

I assume that means she gets mid/standard rate for care/daily living.

If her OH spends >35 hours a week as her Carer then the amount they're seen as needing for a decent standard of living in Pension Credit increases by £45.60/week to £378.55.

TheShellBeach · 13/09/2024 21:15

I'm pretty sure she qualifies for pension credit.

Apply for her. It's a really easy form.

They will still get it if your Mum is on PIP

fizzymizzy · 13/09/2024 21:32

I don't think you get it for being in PIP

ShyMaryEllen · 13/09/2024 21:33

Age UK will advise, and help to fill the forms in.

You generally do, as long as your pension income isn't large.

I get PIP and a full pension, and I get pension credit.

hytdgfr · 13/09/2024 22:01

Yes I think age uk might be a good shout 👍🏻 thank you all so much, please forgive me for being quite confused but I will definitely get right into it

You can calculate online whether or not they are entitled on the Government website.

As you get a full pension, how do you qualify for pension credit?

AncientAndModern1 · 13/09/2024 22:15

Ring this number and talk to someone 0800 99 1234.

hytdgfr · 13/09/2024 22:16

Thankyou this is really helpful. I do appreciate all of the advice. I will call that number
