Energy bills, credit, and going into winter

We moved house in June, and don't have any credit built up with our energy provider. Monthly payments have been set to nearly £300 for a 4-bed semi-detached house.

We have solar panels in this new house, though, and our monthly usage since June has been about £40 or so - I'm not sure what to expect for winter usage, obviously this will go up once the heating goes on etc.

I'm just curious what other people's experiences are with similar house size and monthly payments. Is this a reasonable monthly amount, or should I be getting in touch with them to reduce monthly payments? How much credit do you usually have this time of year?

We're on a tariff with eon guaranteed to be £50 cheaper than the price cap. Thanks.

I'm in a 3 bed terrace and have £700 credit going into winter. I was on a low fix during the worst of the energy crisis which helped me build up a big buffer.

Do you expect to use up that credit by the spring?

We are in a 4 bed detached. Have around £600 in credit and our DD amount has just been reduced again to £153 per month (gas and electric), it started at £200 and 6 months ago reduced to £163. We won't use all that credit over winter, maybe 1/2. Was re with OVO on the variable tariff

@thecoffeewasthething

if you are 'ok' with the EON deal per unit & standing charge which is what matters!!) then I'd pay what they're suggesting (if you can afford to) then see how you're going. You can always reduce your DD later.

im with BG & find their DD calculation probably covers my useage. But I make my DD a good bit more as I HATE having to pay if there's a shortfall or skimp on my use.

But I appreciate that's from a position of that over payment not causing me difficulty. Having just been made redundant that may change 😌

You'll be in debt over winter, then reduce the debt in the summer, as it depends on when your account started. I wouldn't worry, as it seems OK, but will depend on your usage.

We have solar panels too and bills are currently about £60 - £70 per month, with a £285 DD. (5 bed detached with 5 people, pretty high energy use). I've only just come into credit in July/ August after carrying a debt all winter. We also moved in during a June. We don't have smart meters, but I submit readings at least every month.

ETA Our largest bill was in Jan/ Feb at about £500, and smallest in the summer at about £55.

We spent about £400 each month last winter, but our four/five bedroom room house is detached. We don’t have solar power but have spent money on improving the insulation. There are four adults who live in the house, one of whom works from home. We are currently spending over £100 a month for gas and electricity.

I don't know how everyone pays so little, it's exasperating! 2 bed bungalow, 2 people. With UW. Our bills have been £300 since April, and were nearer £450 last winter. A shower a day each an two tumble dryer loads a week. Otherwise just normal domestic use.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2024 11:21

My current payment is £185/month and have a £400 credit. Dh has started charging his car at home so last months electricity bill was around £200. Gas was about £35.

During winter last year we used over £300/month as we used more gas with the heating being on.

Floralnomad · 07/09/2024 11:26

I’m in a 4 bed detached and between the 2 fuels have about £750 credit . I had a fix until last November and we don’t regulate use of anything and use the tumble dryer a lot all year . My bill per month has never been more than £210 per month . We must be well insulated or something .

thecoffeewasthething · 07/09/2024 14:53

It'll be interesting to see what our bills are over this winter. And hope the DD amount doesn't increase at least.

Dredging this up to say I'm now over £400 in credit, which I think is a bit too much surely! E.on isn't taking into account our solar panels at all, and even now we've been popping the heating on here and there I can't see us using £10 worth of energy every day. That's mad.
