UC and rent increase

Winter20245 · 30/08/2024 21:10

I am new to UC and only got told yesterday what I will be getting. My DC are 21, 18 and 9.
Both the older girls will be contributing now.
I am very stressed as this is less than on Tax credits although my now 18yr old has started an apprenticeship.

My landord wants to put my rent up in Jan. I currently pay £950 a month, I have a very good landlord and have been here 10years. They need to get a new mortgage (dont know much about mortgages) and they want to put it up by £300. This is very reasonable, I have a 4 bed house which I love. I know this is still cheap.

I have checked my rent details online. LHA for my area is £287 per week.
My UC credits said they will pay £858.53 minus £91.47 for 1 adult living in the house currently.

My question is would I get more for rent if my rent went up and LHA is £287 per week.

Finding it all so confusing! Thank you!

I don’t understand your question? The weekly rate LHA is the max you would get.

Sorry, so at the moment my rent is £950, I dont get the max because my rent is lower....
So if it went up to £1250 would I get £1148 minus £91 for my adult daughter?

I think whatever you get it will be minus for your 2 older DC now one has turned 18. If £287 is the amount they pay then I don't think this changes if your rent goes up.

Yes, if your rent increases and is now above the max rate your allowance will increase.

Thank you, finding it all so confusing having moved over.

I don't think there is a rent deduction if young adult is under 21. You will get up to the LHA for your area and for the size of house covered for your family.

On UC deductions are made only once dc are 21

Thank you
Im starting a new job monday and they take more money off for earning more. I will be using childcare too and just feel very anxious.

Congratulations on the new job, you can also claim for childcare costs so hopefully you’ll be better off.

If you convert the weekly LHA to monthly it is £1247.08 so that's the max. There will be a non dependant deduction for your 21yo.
