Hi there,
I'm due to go back to work December from maternity leave l, however due to finding it hard to find a childminder and she's on the waiting list for crèche for next June as they only take 1 year and up

I'm wondering if there is anything a married couple can claim to help as after December we will only have his income so about 450 a week which just about covers the bills

Thanks in advance

Have a look online at “entitled to”

TheFlis · 30/08/2024 14:33

Your original post seems to be missing a bit? So you’re saying you won’t be going back to work in December?

Pixiedust24 · 30/08/2024 14:39

Hi yes, I won't be able to go back in December, I can take additional maternity leave but it unpaid, so we will jsut have his income until I'm able to find someone available to mind the daughter

What hours does your partner work? Perhaps getting a job that fits around his hours might help with the childcare issues.

My job has to many benefits and progression within the company to switch, they would be okay with me taking extra time until a place opens up in a crèche or I manage to find a childminder. It just until I find one, I was wondering if there was anything to be able to get to help for a few extra weeks financially for the household expenses as his wages wouldn't be enough to live off.

Maybe Child Benefit but otherwise I’m afraid the reality is that many people struggle to cover childcare and pay for all their bills.

Childcare prices are high, but it's the reality of going back to work if you don't have family to help.

Are you going back full or part time?
Have you taken into account you should get the 15hours term time free in your costings?

CornishTiger · 31/08/2024 18:21

What are your housing costs?

fizzymizzy · 31/08/2024 18:38

A married couple may be entitled to benefits, but it is a means tested system so without knowing your income, nobody can really help.

There are websites you can check out that have benefit calculators which may be helpful

fizzymizzy · 31/08/2024 18:39

Urgh, ignore me I totally missed the £450 a week Blush

Whether you will be eligible for any Universal credit as a couple will depend on a few factors. like savings, how many children, whether you rent or have a mortgage. If you have savings over 16k you cannot claim UC. Uc is quite generous once you have a kid so yes if just on your husband's earnings it's highly likely you would get some UC.

Twinkeeyes · 20/03/2025 21:19

I wonder why some people have children than put in child care and then school and never really see them Are they just a status symbol

I wonder why some people revive old threads just to make pointlessly snarky comments.
