Hi
DH and I need to do our Wills. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this or do we need to find a lawyer and make an appointment? Thanks

Easiest is to find a solicitor, it can all be done by email unless you have anything particularly complex to deal with.

Not necessarily cheap, but definitely easier than trying to do something yourself, you pay for a solicitor's expertise.

If you have relatively simple finances and want a straightforward will then Which? Do a will writing service which is quite simple to use and cheaper than solicitors. It is based on a template and advice/ questions, and everything is checked at the end by solicitors. My partner and I got matching wills through this

Thanks @Hurdlin and @Butterbeanbutterbo. I'm going to have look at Which?

You should have a look at Will Aid. I think it starts in October.

I wouldn’t use a solicitor.

DH grandparents did this during Will Aid month, the will was written in such complex legalese they didn’t really understand it, neither did we, and the solicitors made themselves executors which wasn’t made explicitly clear to the grandparents.

We used a professional will writer (that’s all he does) and once they saw our wills and how easy to understand they are, they binned the ones from the solicitors and used him too.

I used Marlow Wills, run by a MN solicitor who specialises in Wills, and was much cheaper than other quotes, and produced a will that was easy to understand!

I would use a professional will writer or solicitor in order to get the meaning you intend around what happens if your Dc should pre-decease you, understanding the implications of leaving your house to each other or if you wish to leave any assets direct to the children, etc.

Lots of us use Marlow Wills, who is an MNetters. Absolutely brilliant. We did ours over the phone

Another who would use a professional who is willing to ask you the right questions! Especially if you have any complications such as blended families, NC relatives etc.

We used a company that specialises in wills and lpa's locally. I'm really glad I did as the lady that set them up was incredibly knowledgeable and made the whole thing very easy.

We set up both wills and lpa's and had them held with other documents.

Dh's aunt went with a general family solicitor. It cost a lot more and is still being processed.

If you do employ someone to them make sure it'd someone who specialises in it.

Me too - then I did the LPAs too. Really important stuff was translated to ensure that my (not English) wife understood what she was signing and was therefore legally valid.

We’ve used 10 minute wills, for my parents, in-laws and ourselves. All were relatively simple, they are kept on file online.
