Nationwide app questions

Hi, my nationwide app is asking me to confirm employment details, asking how money is paid in to the account but doesn't offer bacs as an option. What else would it be called - direct debit? Bank giro credit?

Mine has never asked me that.

DoomHarbinger · 24/08/2024 14:09

Yeah I know, sounds dodgy but is apparently legit. Nationwide website says they ask every so often as an anti fraud measure. App says if not answered by deadline I won't be able to do online banking. Very annoying.

What other options are there?

Fifthtimelucky · 24/08/2024 14:14

Something like "Faster payments service"?

DoomHarbinger · 24/08/2024 14:16

Not given as a choice. The options it's giving are direct debit, standing order, bank giro credit, internal bank transfer, salary debit, cash or cheque.

Probably the closest option would be bank giro credit. Surely they can see how the payment is made themselves!

KnickerlessParsons · 24/08/2024 15:51

Phone them and ask, or pop into a branch

DoomHarbinger · 24/08/2024 16:05

Thanks for your replies. I'm still umming and ahhing between direct debit and bank giro credit. Why couldn't they just put bacs? Or even 'other' ? Don't want to get it wrong and have my account frozen!

I have just looked at my pension payments in Lloyds which is like salary and that says bank giro credit, I'm sure my salary used to be the same

A direct debit would leave your account. A direct credit would come into your account. I would go with bank giro credit

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 24/08/2024 16:21

I chose salary debit, no idea if that's right, but I thought as it's my salary going in I would go with that one 🤷‍♀️

dementedpixie · 24/08/2024 16:24

A debit leaves your account
Maybe it doesn't matter what you choose

ThingsgetbetterwithalittlebitofRazzmatazz · 24/08/2024 16:27

Yeah but the question was how do you fund your account and that was one of the options so I just went with it. I'd be interested if someone knows the correct answer.

DoomHarbinger · 24/08/2024 16:33

Exactly, all the answers are wrong because the right answer isn't an option! If I was a bank wanting to tackle fraud, I'd not make it impossible to answer the questions correctly!

ShutTheFuckUpCakes · 24/08/2024 16:34

It's almost certainly a BGC.

Eminybob · 24/08/2024 16:40

It is bank giro credit.

Solymoly · 24/08/2024 16:45

Is it just the app that questions you like this, I only use my Nationwide account on my iMac and get codes to my phone as it's just really mainly for savings so I don't need to do much with it like pay people.

dementedpixie · 24/08/2024 16:58

I use the nationwide app and don't recall being asked these questions

Eminybob · 24/08/2024 17:30

It's to do with new money laundering regulations. CDD. If you have recently opened a new account with them you would have been asked the questions at the time. If you haven't then the app will prompt you.

I have checked with the Financial Conduct Authority and they told me they don't tell banks and building societies what actual questions to ask, therefore, it is some eejit in the Nationwide that has decided to ask for your annual income.
