National Insurance credits

I was wondering if anyone could help?

I am entitled to Child Benefit and when I worked I transferred my national insurance contributions from this to my mum who helped with care for my children to allow her to up her state pension.

I now don’t work, however I claim Carers Allowance for looking after my son which I understand can also give me national insurance contributions to my pension. Does this mean I can go back to transferring my child benefit to my mum as she cares frequently for my other two children whilst my time is taken up caring for my one son/ appointments etc?

I would be grateful if anyone knows?
Many Thanks xx

I wouldn't have thought so. I think you can get credits for claiming carers allowance but you don't get two lots of credits, one for CA and one for CB.

No your mother can apply to have the credits transferred to her only if you are not using them.

So my thinking is that because I will gain national insurance credits from carers allowance to go towards my pension I therefore don’t need my child benefit ones (as I can’t use both same as when I was working) so she could have them? 😀

I think you have to be paying national insurance contributions to be able to transfer credits from child benefit to someone else.

You Only get 1 set of credits and there may be a number of ways you can get them.

Jesus, you honestly think this is a reasonable plan? Why not pass your third child to someone else so that they too can get NI creditsHmm No wonder the country's finances are screwed.

Why doesn't your mum just get a job and pay NI or just pay voluntary contributions?

Yes, this is fine. You can transfer the Child Benefit NI credits to your mum as you don't need them. It doesn't matter if you don't need them because you are working and have paid NI contributions, or if you get NI credits from Carer's Allowance.

The credits for Child Benefit are Class 3 credits, and are distinct from the credits for Carer's Allowance, which are Class 1 credits. They don't count twice in your own NI record, but they can be counted separately for 2 different people

Furthermore, if there is another family member who is caring for your disabled dc for 20+ hours per week, they are entitled to Carer's Credit, which is another way of getting NI credits (it doesn't affect your own Carer's Allowance or NI credits). So potentially 3 lots of NI credits for caring for your dc (and may be relevant for your mum once your youngest is aged 12, when the child benefit stops paying NI credits).
