Experiences of Starling Bank please

I'm thinking of changing my current bank account to Starling, as they pay interest and don't charge for use of debit card abroad. Although I'm happy doing online banking I don't want to do it on my phone. What are your experiences of using them? Can you access your account via a website rather than an app?

Watching as I'm interested too.

happyhemsby · 11/08/2024 11:44

I've had starling for 5 years why don't you want to use the app?

mayfridayjune · 11/08/2024 11:46

truly excellent! I think you can do it online as well as app, but you might need to set it up via the app initially (not 100% sure). I love the "spaces" feature - pots you can put money in for various reasons (bills, savings for hols etc).

Sorry to be clear. It's not that I don't want to use the app - I will happily do so at home on my tablet. But I'm not doing banking on my phone.

Starling is great. Easy to use and touch wood, I've never had any issues with it.
DH and I each have an account and also a joint account.

Not sure why you don't want to use your phone.

You can log in via a browser as well.

sunshinechaser · 11/08/2024 12:00

Love it. Great bank. I have used it on my phone for years without an issue. I can't even think of what problems could occur using it on your phone as it would be as secure as any other device.

Thanks everyone

I’ve used them for 4 years and I find them ti be fantastic. I’ve used the online support via the app a few times and it’s always been quick and easy. The savings pots have actually changed my life!

Bathh82 · 11/08/2024 15:44

It's the best acc I've ever had. I have lots of different 'spaces' and I've got one for Holidays, Xmas, birthdays, car, dance lessons, hair plus more. I also use the round up so for everything I spend I've chosen for it to round it up and money goes into my holiday pot. For example if i spend 2.50 then 50p goes into my holiday space.
I wish I got it ages ago!

sunburnandsangria · 11/08/2024 15:50

I've met the founder of Starling Bank (a woman!) she's ace. I think their 'product' is a good modern offering and a great disruptive competitor to the old traditional banks.

(I'm not very good at changing account so don't use it myself though Blush)

OtisPotis · 11/08/2024 15:54

I'm very had an account with them for years and find them brilliant. The whole family has switched over. Far excels the old high street banks.

Educationexpert · 11/08/2024 15:55

An amazing bank. I love it. Business and personal is through it.

tribpot · 11/08/2024 16:04

Very happy with Starling Bank - I didn't even know you could log in via a browser until this thread, so thanks for that.

It looks as if major functions (like making a payment) need the app, but not necessarily on a phone. I would set up an account before switching your current account, so you have time to check it out properly before committing to it.

HarpieDuJour · 11/08/2024 16:11

I have a personal account and two business accounts with them. I highly recommend them.

TheDandyLion · 11/08/2024 16:11

Very happy with my starling account for over 5 years. Dh and I have a joint starling account too. Easy to see the transactions, search for old purchases, set up savings pots, direct debits from the saving pots. There's nothing that you can't do on the app that you would normally do in branch.

Ihateslugs · 11/08/2024 16:12

Regarding reluctance to use a phone to access online banking, I won’t do that either. I feel more secure doing any banking on my iPad when at home ( hardly ever take my iPad out of the house) rather than when out and about. I worry that if I lose my phone or someone takes it, they might then find a way to access my bank account! I might be wrong to worry about it but so far I’ve not had any need to use my bank account when out.

MrsPussinBoots · 11/08/2024 16:15

I love Starling bank and haven't had any problems in the last 4 years. You can pay in cheques up to £1,000 with a photo. Free to use abroad. No card reader to add new payees. And the web chat support is great too. 10yo has got a card through the Spaces feature. 100% recommend but I've only used the app.

Battytwatty · 11/08/2024 16:19

I’m also a very happy Starling customer. I had been with Santander for years , since they were Abby National actually. But I thought it was time for a change. Never use the branches , did my research and chose Starling. It’s a brilliant bank. The transfer over was really easy too.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 11/08/2024 16:36

Very happy with them.

Charcol · 12/08/2024 13:27

i recommend Starling, and yes you can use app or website

Lincslady53 · 12/08/2024 14:12

We have had an account for about 3 years. I was concerned about being app only, as our previous bank was easy to use via a website. As we were deciding, they brought in a website as well as an app. We had to open 2 individual accounts, then combine them for a joint account. I needn't have worried about the app. Very easy to use, you can set up separate pots, so we have a holiday pot, and a pot for one of our children, who has struggled with his budgeting and this helps him, knowing he can't spend it without asking. You get over 3% interest, free withdrawals in some atms abroad, and brilliant exchange rates. I have just made a payment for a hotel in Ireland and got €1.165 to the £. One disadvantage, you deposit cash via the post office, but the us a £1,000 a year limit, before they charge for depositing cash, so if you get a lot of cash to be banked, it may not be for you. Not a problem for us. We use the joint account for everything, but we both have a few £100 in our separate accounts for buying presents etc. No regrets moving, and would recommend to anyone.

1apenny2apenny · 12/08/2024 14:12

I don't use Starling, DH does and finds it good. However my teenage DS recently applied for one of their teenage accounts (student who works pt and has savings) and was rejected with no explanation and a clear message of 'no we won't tell you why'.I felt this was short sighted ( not that it affects other people!) in that he'll now go to another bank and they've lost someone who would have been a lifelong customer! So he'll do Chase I expect now.

Have a look at bonuses and cash back on MSE, quite a few offering it - up to £200.

Lincslady53 · 12/08/2024 14:14

You can do all your admin via the website, but when you make an online payment that needs extra authorisation, or log onto the website, it is done by reading a QR code via the app. I am not sure if there is an alternative way of authorisation.

JoyousPinkPeer · 12/08/2024 14:16

Absolutely love Starling. We use it mainly for savings and for travelling abroad. Can't beleive I didn't open an account years ago, would have made life a lot easier.
