Awful issues with our bank - which bank would you recommend

Our bank is AWFUL and we need to change

DH thinks it will be a hassle as we have standing orders and Direct Debits etc set up on the account, but i do not want to stay with them a minute longer than we have to

so, we need a bank that won't freeze our account over a weekend, leaving us without access to our money, or allow fraudsters plenty of access to our account either

(plus a reasonable overdraft limit, and good interest rate when we are in credit)

TIA

I've been with them 13 years and never had a problem!!! Had 3 mortgages with them, savings and current accounts etc

Prufrock · 15/04/2008 16:03

Yep - and it's fixed until April 2009. I had been putting off changing for ages because I thought it would be so painful but it's actualy been really easy. They will also match your existing o/d, but give a standard one of £2,500 anyway

DON'T DO BARCLAYS! they are bloody awful, useless, stuck up their own arses...no recommendations though I'm afraid, but I'm watching this thread carefully to find another bank for myself and the kids once I'm not tied into a mortgage/current account with them. BLOODY BARCLAYS!

somersetmum · 15/04/2008 16:08

Another vote for First Direct, cannot fault them.

hana · 15/04/2008 16:22

first direct

gawd, they are getting lots of reccomendations here!

have been with them donkey's years. think they have a £100 incentive to switch over

lulumama · 15/04/2008 16:32

bloody hell ruby, that is appalling!

prufrock, that sounds like a fantastic account !

jcscot · 15/04/2008 19:37

I'll put in a vote for Lloyds. We bank with them through their "private" military branch and they have been very helpful and understanding. We've never had any problems with them.

Swedes · 15/04/2008 19:42

Coutts, the bank that likes to say yah.

Millarkie · 15/04/2008 20:05

Another vote for First Direct. I tend to ring and chat to them rather than use the internet. They are very friendly and always sort things out for me.

We have a First Direct Off-Set mortgage package - so although no interest on current account, any balance in it reduces mortgage interest, but you get to keep separate accounts (I never liked the Virgin One account idea).

No problems, and we have been with them for 10 years.

toadette · 15/04/2008 20:35

Another very happy First Direct customer here, I have always found their telephone staff really helpful.

MinkyBorage · 15/04/2008 20:40

found smile good, they have an ethical investment policy too. they do all the traansfers for you

ib · 15/04/2008 20:43

First Direct here too. They recently called up to check whether some transactions on dh's card were fraudulent (they were) before we even noticed them! All cleared up within a couple of days and the money never left our account.

RubySlippers · 16/04/2008 08:02

LOLOL at Coutts!

Right, it looks like First Direct may be the one to try

it is unusual to get such a lot of good recommendations for one bank

thank you all!
