How do you change your name?

Just wondering if anyone's done this. I've found several web sites claiming to be able to be able to change your name by deed poll but it seems too easy. They all seem to be charging a different price and the one I looked at didn't even ask for any ID.

Is there an official web site?

If not then surely anyone could change anyone else's name to whatever they felt like!

There's more that one way of doing it:

  1. The cheap way: Go to a solicitors firm and ask them to draw up a Statutory Declaration changing your old name to your new one. Should be around £50 (well, that's what I charge). You'll then have to go to another firm to "swear" it. Which will cost you £5 in cash
  1. The more official way: Go to a solicitors firm and get it changed by Deed Poll, which is a special sort of document changing names and get the name change published in the London Gazette, which is the official publication of the Government and makes it more official.

You'll probably find it easier to deal with officialdom if you go via the latter route, and it shouldn't be more than about £150-£200

DH and I did the cheap way when we were married and have had no trouble at all - sometimes people ask for a copy but it has never been a problem.

Ahh. Thanks. So what are all these people claiming they can change it on line all about?

Is there a way you can do it without a solicitor?

Hi there and sorry for butting in. I agree with Seabright as a fellow solicitor! However, didn't do a stat dec just a change of name deed and that sufficed for my clients and my sister! Then no need to have sworn!!!!
