Can I get this £100 back two years on…

Ok I’ll be the first to admit I can be a little obsessive, but I can’t stop thinking about this £100 eBay purchase I made two years ago 🫠

I bought a smart thermostat from eBay when DD was born. When it arrived, it turned out it was already registered to the previous owner’s account (not sure if the seller was the previous owner) so I couldn’t set it up or use it. The seller didn’t seem able to de-register it when I contacted them, so I assume not their account.

I then requested a return and refund, but in the end I didn’t return it within the 30 days as DD had a few health issues so I was distracted by that. My bad, for sure.

Afterwards, I messaged the seller and asked if he’d still accept a return and refund but he didn’t reply. Which seemed fair enough, so I just left it.

But now I always just think about it and want my £100 back. Is there any way??? It’s not like I just changed my mind about the item. The item was actually unusable. I spent £100 on something that wasn’t as advertised.

Is there any way I can force the seller to refund me (obviously I’d return the thermostat too)?

After two years.....no. you should have contacted eBay directly and asked them for a refund. Time to let it methinks

ShanghaiDiva · 02/08/2024 08:22

Not a chance…you need to let this go.

Mamofteenager · 02/08/2024 08:25

Sorry Op but no. After 2 years you wouldn't be able to return to a registered shop/business never mind second hand via EBay.

I think you will just have to let this 1 slide.

Procrastinates · 02/08/2024 08:25

It was two years ago of course you can't!

You were offered a refund at the time and you didn't send it back in time there's a window for returns for a reason.

Growlybear83 · 02/08/2024 08:29

Of course you can't return it after two years! 😂😂. It's highly unlikely that details of the listing are even still even stored on eBay's database after all this time.

The details and order summary are all still there!

But yeah lol I know I probably can’t.

I read on Citizen’s Advice I think it was, a while back, that I might be able to reclaim money in this sort of situation up to 6 years later?! But idk.

I just want my £100 😭 I can’t let it go 😭😭

There must be a way to factory reset the thermostat. I'd go down that route and resell

Chasingsquirrels · 02/08/2024 09:52

What make is it?
My parents recently moved into a new house and the NEST thermostat was registered to the previous, deceased, owner. We did a reset and registered it to them.

Eastie77Returns · 02/08/2024 12:18

Why are you suddenly fixating on this £100 now, 2 years later? I’m sorry OP but this sounds very odd.

andymary · 02/08/2024 12:28

No, you had your chance to return it within the time limit and failed to do so.
What if you had sold some of DD things that she's outgrown, and then 2 years later the buyer comes back to you saying oh actually I had an issue with this item I want my money back... you'd be like "no chance"! Plus, you wouldn't have that money anymore, it would have already been spent so you don't have it to refund back.
Be reasonable OP.

It’s Nest. I did try at the the time, but from what I could remember I had to connect to Wi-Fi to do a reset, and I couldn’t do that because it was registered to somebody else… I went through help forums, read the manual, loads of stuff. But I couldn’t do it. Maybe I was just sleep deprived though.

Yeah. I’ve been hankering over this £100 for the last two years (well, 20 months). The annoying thing is I checked with my bank today and if it had been 18 months I might have been able to get the money back as I bought with on credit card!!

Oh well. I think I have to find a way to let it go.

I bought a second hand nest a year ago, it can definitely be reset. It took me a few gos to get it to connect to the WiFi and receiver but it got there in the end

Chasingsquirrels · 03/08/2024 07:54

We had to try the hard reset several times to get it to work, I'd suggest having another bash at it.

Izzynohopanda · 03/08/2024 08:06

Two years, no, especially as you’ve already had the option of returning it, and didn’t.

why don’t you sell it to recoup some money.

I wouldn’t want to resell something that couldn’t be used, I’d feel guilty!! But maybe I can do the factory reset and I just didn’t do it right when I tried before. I’ll have another shot.

You should have done something about it much much sooner

Tikk · 03/08/2024 08:38

You had 30 days. You didn't return it. It's way too late.

Overthebow · 03/08/2024 08:53

Seeing as it was in you to return it and you didn't, you aren't going to get he money back. It's your fault not the sellers.
